Does it freeze where you are. Whats the deck material, ultraset cannot be used over plywood directly. i wouldn't necessesarily walk away form the job yet, i would show the customer the TDS sheet for ultra set and i would email Bostik's tec support. http://www.bostik-us.com/technical-support/default.html
They are usually pretty quick at responding.
I would use sheet membrane like Noble's Nobledec or Schluter's exterior system. not too familiar with exterior hot mopping.

I have not ran the deflecto on it , the deck already has tile set on a mortor bed and a hot mop under that which has failed I feel that the deck should be sound there is slope built in to the deck. what about schluter- ditra?

Maybe that thing failed because the structure is not 'sound', and there was too much movement.

It's easy to verify the structure if you know what it is. Plug the numbers into Mr Deflecto and find out if it really is sound.

I will run the Deflecto on it and have the gen. contractor make sure that it will be a sound for tile. the reason the deck is coming up is that it has started to leak in the living room under. it is 15 years old maybe it has just started to move in the last few years which has cracked the hot mop. The contractor will fix any problems (water damage ) and make sure it is solid. I just need to get it waterproof.

I ran Mr. Deflecto and it gave a thumbs up for tile but thumbs down for stone which is ok since they will be using a 18x18 porcelain tile.

thanks

Welcome, Wristen. Or Sean. Whichever name you prefer us to use is the one you should have in your signature line.

You've also gotta consider, or have your GC consider if he's not aware, that there is a higher load requirement required for framing on raised deck areas.

Does the deck have the required slope built into the framing?

Do tell us what the framing is, 'specially the joist spacing, and what sort of subflooring you have over the joists. If you know.

My opinion; worth price charged.

It's not very often I tile over tile. No way am I tiling over tile on a leaking deck. No telling what kind of shape the plywood is in, probably half rotten. I'd bust it all out and start over or walk away.

Tell the homeowner how you want to do it, you have to stand behind the job, not him.
