I use Rockite (http://www.rockitecement.com) for such patches.

Works well and sets in minutes. You could use Bondo as well.

Rather than place a mid span beam we often build a closet the length of one of the bearing walls or beams to reduce the span if there is a basement or a room below to reduce the span.

The sheetrock needs to be cut out about 3 inches or so over to the edge of the tile nosing as cx pointed out in post 54. They may have to add deadwood to secure the wallboard and CBU....

Are the tiles flat? Place some unused tiles face to face and back to back. If they rock or not flush they are warped.
