Just got a note from CX and it appears someone has linked my email address to some stuff not coming from me. If you get something disregard. Anyone else have this and how do you prevent it? I have a router and firewall set up. I have received such emails from people I know it didn't come from.

One I received had a blank Subject line, always a red flag, eh?

I got no eye-dee how peoples get into someone else's email account to send that sorta stuff. Got even less eye-dee why.

Mine had no content except a url, which went to a known harmful site that my AVG program fortunately blocked and flagged.

Jon, you will have to change your email password to block that pos.

I doubt someone got into his account.

It sounds more like someone spoofed his email address. There are many spoof programs out there.

I have a spoof program that allows you to change your caller id phone number to whatever you want.

cx,

Yes. They have bots that can find all this out. That's why they spoof the email address to get known "contacts" to give up some info.

Isn't this the Anthony Wiener defense?

What exactly are we going to see in our inbox?

Had issues with my Yahoo/ATT emails.. Was sending put all kinda solutions for election problems and poor health.. ;)
Could not change my ATT/SBC/Yahoo password and had to have an ATT'r do it for me.. She had difficulties but that resolved the issue.. In the meantime, I put a (1) in front of every contact making it not sendable and I got alla the fictitious emails back as undeliverable.. at least I wasn't bothering my contacts with Viagra and Cialis ads... :shades:

Call it anything you like, but if someone is gaining access to his email address book to send spam to his contacts, they're getting into his account far as I'm concerned.

Just how is this "spoofing" you're talking about any different?

Kelly there is a trojan out there that is basically a virus that will automatically send to your entire contact list basically on a daily basis. I got some weird emails from my dad with only a Y in the subject line.... it had a url in the body. I told him and he said he knew and was trying to resolve it, and that a friend of his had sent him the same email, and although he didn't open the url just opening the email got him.

of course it isn't a person going into your email and sending each and every contact an email, but somebody made the bot and that someone is the pos I was referring to. Any way changing your password will block the bot, person, pos whatever you want to call it

....and although he didn't open the url just opening the email got him. get a Mac. or Linux. Seriously. While Windoze can certainly be protected against most of that stuff, it's a constant battle.

I remember a few years ago my wife asking me about some weird looking e-mail from a friend of hers. I took a quick look and said "Oh, that just a virus." She freaked out. So I said, "It's a Windoze virus - don't worry about it. Just delete the message so you don't pass it along." Turns out her friend had told her earlier that day that people were getting email that looked like it came from her so her system would be down for a few days while she got it cleaned up.

Brian guess they got you too, Rick(whichever one you choose) has spoofed my email address and sent that message to you and everyone on the JB Forum who would like to have a Cheesesteak. You had better pick a bigger joint next time, your last c/s Philly joint was kinda small:shrug:

Speakin a buyin I think I bought last time so next one can be on you, but because you aren't busy with work we unnerstand if you can't.

Not quite because I didn't hold press conferences and waste people's time to try and divert the attention. Unfortunately for the Wiener who got cooked, no National Disaster was able to focus the attention off his..... I mean him. He tried to say it was Brian's body with Wiener's head on:drevil:

Update, I did change my aol password which I had not done for a long time. As for my aol address book I deleted most of the accounts, people don't use email anymore they text. This spoofing program, so you can just take someone email address and use it? If that is the case no one is protected if they can just get your address and use it:think:
