yeah right...17...not with the hemi gas guzzler.
I'm averaging 19 with my 4.6 Ford and its a new truck for better gas milage.
glad I got one that doesn't guzzler gas since its going up again through the winter..

I've got an '03 Hemi, and when it was nearly new and empty I could get 18 out on the Interstate. Then I loaded all my stuff in the back. I currently get about 11 in the city.

One of the drawbacks of the Hemi is that it takes some fairly expensive service every 30,000 miles. You have to change all the fluids, which are synthetic (except for engine oil), and you have to replace all 16 spark plugs (which are impossible to even see). :)

Other than that the engine has run great. I currently have 84,000 on it, many of those miles towing a travel trailer around North America, including a trip to Alaska. It's a good engine.

You bunch of wusses. I've got a '94 V6 Chevy Vortec engine with over 230,000 miles on it and I'm still getting around 21 MPG. Course yall'd kick my but drag racing................and I try to stay off the highway...............but it gets great mileage.

My son has the same Dodge with a chip and gets about 15 empty i think.About what i get with my Chevy 325 in city with tools in it.

I don't know which year model Opie's Hemi is but I heard they did something recently (within the past year or so) to the engine to get better mileage. Don't know what they did to it.

maybe he is coasting on the highway.
I know my average was in the low 20's when i just drove to NJ.
but that was all highway miles.
you average it down and I was getting 19.
hard to believe a Hemi would get anywhere near 15 averageThe Dodge 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine was introduced in 2003 by Chrysler LLC. It replaced the less efficient Magnum 5.9-liter and the 8-liter V-10, which powered the heavy-duty Dodge Ram pickups. The Hemi does not have a reputation for fuel efficiency, but in recent years Chrysler has made great strides in developing it to gain better gas mileage.

The EPA estimates the Ram 1500 equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission achieves 14 mpg in the city and 20 on the highway. Highway mileage drops slightly to 19 mpg when equipped with the Hemi to handle gasoline or 85 percent ethanol. Mileage further declines on 4-wheel-drive models with 13 in the city and 18 on the highway.

I have the 5.7 liter Hemi in my Dodge Magnum and I average about 17.5 but I have a need for speed. I put a Dyna-max exhaust system on it but haven't chipped it. I changed the plugs at 32,000 and it was no big deal. It's true they sit way down in there.

its a 06 dodge ram 1500 quad cab. its called the nite runner package so the juiced up the hemi some. i have a chip n it. also getting borola stainless exhaust all the way back to the tail true duals. the only other things you can do is change the pulley and add a whipple super charger to it. right now i am at 425 hp. yeah so far 17 is just a toolbox on the rail. goona put a soft cover over the back. didnt know it had 16 plugs in it. but i also found a 2010 dodge ram truck that was wrecked with a hemi in it and has 3500 miles on it. so i am gonna buy that to have a spare motor. i am sure if i put weight in it i will drop at least 1 or 2 miles

what thing ?

This "Tundra" thing. I haven't personally raced a hemi but I can tell you my truck can keep up with all cars in my family. Having had seven Chevy trucks of various models, my Tundra is far quicker than any of my former Chevy's.

every time I get a new automobile/truck they are and feel faster then the previous one, because they are.

Brendan Gaughan is a excellent NASCAR truck racer and the Dodge engines are surely strong.
that older Ford SVT F-150 Lightning was definitely a fast truck.

I just bought an 09 dodge crew cab with a 5.7 hemi, according to the data it goes from 0-60 in under 7 seconds. I use my Cummins when hauling materials, I use the 5.7 when I am hauling my golf clubs! It has factory dual exhaust and 390 stock HP.:devil2:

Maybe the Dodge is faster than my Tundra though I would still love to test that theory, but I stand by my opinion that Toyota makes a superior truck to anything GM, Ford and especially Dodge make. Toyota also holds its value better than those other trucks. I'll never go back.

Brian in San Diego
10-29-2009, 04:16 PM
Rick,

I was yanking your chain. The production Tundra is faster than the production Dodge with the 5.7 L Hemi. And if you have the 5.7 L Tundra you could give me a race and it'd be too close to call from where I sit.

So the price of fuel is relatively low, and the talk is of speed. When fuel was nudging four bucks a gallon the talk was of fuel economy. And on this thread the talk now centers on Dodge bashing. I'm really ashamed of all you inferior truck driving, sour grapes, individuals.

Dan,

Send me the Dyno results. Unless you have the SRT8 6.1 L I'm saying no way you are making over 400 HP. The stock 5.7L is 340 HP and chips, cold air intake and exhaust won't put it in the 420 range. If you have the SRT8 6.1 L then you have my apologies for speaking out of turn...as well as

When I was shopping for my new truck, my first choice was a Chevy Crewcab. When I opened the door and saw the back seat of the Tundra, I knew I had to have the Tundra. I believe it has 9" more legroom than the Crewcab. Chevy really needs to evolve and enlarge their puny back seat.

and hes not getting 17mpg.

show me the data.

I dont know how it goes with new chip etc. but my stock hemi gets me around 16.4 average summer driving and around 14.8 winter ( warm up time etc)
Unloaded Highway mpg decreases with Speed but I have broken 20MPG at Aprox 60 mph drafting a semi :D
Realistic Freeway mpg around 17.8 at speeds of 70-75 mph ( keep in mind, Mine is a 1/2 ton so yea, a 3/4 wouldnt do nearly as well.)

From everything ive read, messing with chips airflow etc increases HP and decreases MPG

Tires can have a dramatic effect on Quads also with Highway tires giving better mpg than all terrains from what i have read.

Of course there is always the unexplained exception to every rule....weve all heard of/seen the freak vehicle that gets 25 mpg when everyone else with same model is getting 16-17.....it happens..who knows why.

Wish I had one a them :D

Back seat leg room in the Tundra. Might I point out that you don't operate the damn thing from the back seat? :D

Dodge has some kind of super duper cab, too, but there's hardly any room in the bed. Are we talking trucks or sedans? ;)

Davy, I love the Cummins, too. My 5.9 routinely walks a 12 ton load up inclines without down shifting. Speed slows to about 55, but it hunkers down right there. On steeper, longer inclines I have to shift into fifth. Hemi, Tundra, won't do that. :)

Don't want to hear about Power Stroke and Duramax. Never could figure out why they need eight cylinders to do the job of six. :D

The Dodge diesel dually actually belongs to Patti. I only drive it when we're pulling the trailer. My truck is the '03 Hemi. They are both Laramies, though, with leather and all the goodies. They don't have ten extra inches of leg room for three-hundred pound real men in the back seat, though. They are work trucks. ;)

frame made crunching noises like it was cracked in 5 months.

Y'all need to look at the whole picture. Opie's running 425 HP. Something is going to break, the transmission is next. They aren't made to hold up that kind of power. There are plenty of failures in all trucks. I'm surprised the dealer is replacing it free.

opiethetileman

its a 06 has 57k miles on it. its running rite now 415 hp had it dynod. When i bought the truck the abs light was on made note of it. They gave me an I owe you slip. well the rear end and the abs go togther so . They are having to buy a new rear end in it because of the year of the truck and the special package that is in it. trust me i have not been hot rodding the thing or bracket racing with it. I looked at it last nite at the dealer they had it on a lift with the rear cover open. the worm gears teeth were shott and broke off. just means someone was power shifting and probly abusing it. The tranny in the turck is new I had the vin number run and have contacted the onwer of the truck that bought it new. I am the second owner of the truck. i loved my ford trust me I drove it home w k on it and it died with 256k on it. i got my money way out of it. it was a stock f150 v6 5 spd. no power just bare truck. After they change the rear end in the black truck. I am problly gonna just find a work truck to work out of. they gave me a laoner till its fixed and to be honest this one is a 05 dodge ram work truck and they want nothing for it. so we will see how it goes. and everyone can make their fun cracks about dodge and yada yada yada. but how many of you have a bank note on a truck?????????????????????????????????????????????? yeah so mean time the show must go on

tileguy_n_ky
11-07-2009, 08:23 AM
The fact that the previous owner put a tranny in it makes me go hmm. I think the tone ring for the abs is mounted between the ring gear and the carrier. So, abs problem could have led to the rear end trouble too. Side note, the axle is built by a company named American Axle Manufacturing. AAM also makes the axle assemblies for GM. That being said, I drive a Dodge, sorta. The frame is made by Freightline. Cummins gives it the go, Aisin (subsidiary of Toyota) makes the 6 speed tranny and a hefty Dana135 axle is in the rear. Of course, my truck is made to work. Trust me, going fast is not an option, but no problem hauling a load.

I'm the first one to dog a company if I see an overall major problem with the product. I haven't heard of Dodge having a rearend problem. Maybe Dan needs a rearend from an SRT.

It wasn't that long ago, I believe 2006 when Ford come out with their new Powerstroke. Talk about pretty trucks, I know a framer that had one. Power everything , heated leather seats and all. Every time I would see him he would dog my truck for some reason or another, he never missed a chance. That stopped the day he burned up the engine in his truck. We aren't talking about a rearend but a 12 thousand dollar motor. He had it towed to the closest dealer, he said they parked it in the back next to 4 or 5 others that had burned up. Funny how Ford owners don't remember this major screw up.:shake:

well davy that is what they putting back under it. its the only rear end made to fit under it because of the ho hemi under the hood. remember i have a special package truck its the night runner. only made in 06. if they put a regular rear end in the torque will rip it apart. the orignal guy put a tranny it because it had noise and the first guy has money and this truck came from texas. dont know but will find out next week when i get it back. they gave me a loaner to drive so i didnt have to rent a van or buy a beater. its a 05 dodge ram and they dont want much for it so if they fix my rear end and get it rite i might just buy this 05 dodge and use it for work that way they didnt loose out to bad

I had problems with Dodge trucks back in the eighties and nineties, but all trucks had problems and still do. I got rid of a Dodge I had put a tranny and an engine in -- less than 150,000 (hard) miles. Bought a GMC stick shift. Was very happy to trade that loser in on the '03 Hemi, which has had zero problems other than accessories. 84,000 miles so far. Still got the original (after market Michelin) tars on it even. ;)

Dan, back in the mid 70's I bought a Plymouth from a kid that had beefed it up. This kid built the motor in his high school mechanics class. I'm not sure what all he did to it, I know it had a high lift cam because it would hardly idle. It was a 340 with a 6-pak, that's 3 two barrell carbs. He had it dynoed at 450 hp. He went through several trannys, finally installed a Art Carr racing transmission that would hold up to that engine. He had 4 turn buckles from the block to the frame to keep it from breaking the motor mounts.

I won a lot of drag races with that car and it was fun to drive. Scary sometimes. Take care of your tranny, it's hard on them.;)

Next time set your ometer and do the math after filling up. Those computers can be off 1 to 2 MPG. Still, that's good mileage for the HP you have.

They were talking about the Corvette. Has a lot of power and will still get 30 MPG if you have a light foot. :)

Brian in San Diego

The Corvette has a 6 speed transmission and that can make all the difference on the highway. Knew a guy who had a newer Vette and he cruised to Laughlin, NV and back at around 85 MPH and got 28 MPG. Gotta remember they are pretty light, too.

When Don Garlits was the pilot on the pedal, Hemis were always amazing engines especially when you consider the technology behind them came from a company firmly rooted in the stone age. Now they are just another Fiat, so add lousy electrics to the ever growing list of crap that doesn't work as advertised on a Dodge/Chrysler :D

Yeah the no longer available in a production vehicle 454 laughs at the hemi. Are you refering to the 5.7 hemi that Dan has, the 6.2 hemi or the hemi's of yesterday (60's)? ;-)

I still like my Dodges. Though I tend to stick to the trucks with a 6 cylinder.
