View Full Version : OMG DIY network used luan under Ditra.

Just got done watching DIY Networks Kitchen Impossible. They ripped up the old flooring and 1/4" underlayment. They wanted to keep the underlayment, but it was easier to take out the 1/4" ply because the peel and stick tiles were "stuck". The subfloor was some kind of wood planking. They then glued and stapled 1/4" luan, (yes they said luan) to the subfloor. They then used Ditra under the the ceramic tiles. They only had a quick shot of the tile guys laying the tiles. Wonder why they skipped over that part so quickly?

These are supposed to be professionals teaching America how to DIY. No wonder there are so many botched jobs out there.

Thank goodness for this forum and all the expert advice you get here.

Again, thank you all that take the time to help out DIYers like me. Where else would I get good information. Not from the TV.

That's too bad. That show will contribute to headaches for Schluter and heartaches to homeowners who will pay to have their floors redone. :(

Is it right? No... Is it guaranteed to fail? Not necessarily. I pulled out a 12 year old floor yesterday that still looked fine. (except for the ugly blue color :suspect:) The tile was bonded to 1/4" luan ply that was screwed and glued to the subfloor. There was plenty of construction adhesive under there, another thing we advise against here. :tup2:
