This past weekend was quite an experience for me and my wife. We traveled to San Francisco to attend my good friend Alan's third wedding. What made this event so extraordinary was; this was the first time I have seen Alan in roughly 8 years. Alan and I met in 8th grade and we instantly became best friends and remained best friends throughout our school years and beyond.
In 1994, both Alan and his wife and me and my wife, decided to move to Phoenix, Arizona. Coincidentally, neither family initially knew about the others plans. After many years in the desert, Alan, a master chef, and his family moved to California to take a job at Wolfgang Pucks restaurant. Just after that, my family moved back east to N. Carolina.
Alan and I had a bit of a falling out and for reasons I won't go into, we did not speak to each other after we moved apart. Last year I found his wife's website and sent her an e-mail. She told us that they had gotten divorced and she forwarded me his e-mail address. I sent him a message and he left me the most exciting message on my answering machine.
Talking to him again felt like old times. I also came to find out that he had fallen in love again and was planning a wedding. One year later, my wife and I found ourselves sharing in his special day and reconnecting with him and his kids who I was also very close with. Of course, no trip to San Francisco would be complete without some sightseeing so we spent our first two days at Fishermans Wharf which is an amazing place filled with people, seals, restaurants, activities and enough eye candy to fill a camera.
After our stay at the Wharf, we rented a car drove to Pleasanton, about an hour east, to get ready for the wedding. The night before the wedding, we finally met up with Alan, his kids, his fiance and their friends and families. He had us over at a local Chevy's restaurant for drinks (he is the executive director of research and development for Chevy's).
The next day, we were picked up at the hotel by a limo-shuttle and taken to Murietta's Well, a famous winery in Livermore, in the middle of California's wine country. The wedding was spectacular, as was the food and drinks. After the wedding we partied at the hotel bar and the next morning, we were treated to brunch by the bride's family.
After the brunch, we loaded up the car and headed north through Oakland, past San Fran and into Muir Woods, home to one of the last remaining stands of coastal redwoods. I've been waiting all my life to see these amazing trees, the tallest living things on God's green earth. It was worth the wait.
We finally headed back to San Fran to prepare for our 10:45PM flight home. After crossing the Golden Gate, we found ourselves caught in the middle of gridlock. It was "fleet week" (featuring the Blue Angels) and the city was overrun by people. The "Presidents Cup" golf tourney and a 49ers game, made the situation even worse. It was a frustrating end to a great trip. Some pictures;

We rented bikes and rode over the Golden Gate bridge into Sausalito, where we boarded the ferry and headed back to San Fran, passing by Alcatraz on the way, while the Blue Angels, practicing for their show, roared above.

We wanted to do the Alcatraz tour but ran out of time. My friend said to do the night tour. Maybe next time.

Great pics, Rick. I haven't done Alcatraz either. Patti and I like the Wharf. Have lunch when we're nearby. Lots of people think San Francisico is hokey, and it is, but it is one unique city. :)

The Wharf is off the charts. Besides the shops and eateries and attractions, you've got breakdancers and mimes in the streets, and people everywhere. My God, so many people. Very unique city indeed, John. What really stuck out to me and my wife was how international it is. Obviously its dominated by Asian culture but in our hotel, it seemed like half the people were of European descent. Far cry from life here in North Carolina where we have two languages, English and Southern English.:D

I have been to SF a few times to then head to the Laguna Seca/Mazda raceway for Superbike races.

i loved it. Alcatraz was great, especially if you paid for the headset guided tour.
the wharf is fun, did you eat a breadbowl with clam chowder in it at the round building to the left of the wharf ?
and you are lucky to have gone there when the seals and sea lions come back. i have seen them once and missed them 2 other times.
I see you went by Coit tower and down some streets, did you ride the trolley ?
go to Lombard street?
did you go on the 17mile drive ? there nice too to do and see.

Glad you had a great time. I always love visiting San Francisco, but have had to do a few jobs there. Not always easy to find parking. Coit tower is cool, and as Ceramictec said, getting over near Monterey and seeing 17 Mile Drive is awesome. There's a lot of history and uniqueness in that area. The redwood trees sure make you feel small, in so many ways. Neat to see a tree that has stood for thousands of years.

Thanks guys. It was a fun place to take pictures. I hope my friends third marriage works out too. They seem genuinely in love but then again, that was the case in his first two marriages. I wish him and his new bride the best. Next year, we'll be meeting them in Phily to attend our 30th high school reunion.

Brian, we didn't get to do all those things you mentioned. The bike ride took a good part of day one. After taking a rest, we walked to a sports bar across the street from out hotel, for dinner. We were tired and wanted to stay close. On day two, we had to get a taxi ride to the airport to pick up our rental car. From there, we drove to our second hotel in Pleasanton, about an hour's drive from our first hotel.

The wedding was on Saturday and on Sunday, we drove to see the redwoods and then it was off to the airport to return the rental car and head home. It was an action packed four days even if we didn't get to do some of the traditional Frisco tours and eateries. We did have amazing crepes on Pier 39 before we left the area.

Once we picked up our rental car, we had no desire to drive back through that madness. The hotels charge $40 just to park your car and that's only if you are staying there. That we had to drive back through Frisco to get to the airport on Sunday, was insanity!

Traffic madness seems to have converged on the entire California coast from about Mendecino on down. :) I know they're talking about having Coverings in L.A. in 2011. In fact, I think it's a done deal. Not looking forward to that.

$40 for hotel parking, eh? I think that might be a deal as compared to Chicago, for example. It's amazing. I think you can still get a room at the Motel 6 for about forty bucks. And free parking to boot. And free WI-FI. :D

Smartest thing we did was getting a room at the Wharf and avoiding getting a car until we left the city. California traffic makes me appreciate North Carolina.
