View Full Version : Using an enhancer on travertine

We just installed travertine in our hall and bath, we tried to match it to existing travertine in our entryway and kitchen (which is 1 year old).

We used the impregnator sealer (2 coats) and it looks pretty good. Only now I am noticing that the existing travertine has more of a gloss (or semi-gloss) finish to it, I guess I thought the sealer might provide this on its own.

My question:
Is it too late to use an gloss enhancer, on the new installation, since we already sealed it? If so, do we have any other options?

Thank you in advance,

but you could use "mira matte" I believe, which is an enhancer of sorts.

the stone should luster a bit on it's own from foot traffic and wear over time.

I've used 004 steel wool to brighten the finish of trav as well.

do a test first, whatever you try -- in an inconspicuos area:tup1:

good luck -

Not much you can really do with sealers and enhancers and you definaitly don't want to use any topical products on it like wax.

Usually in this situation you have to have a stone pro come out and take both the floors up a notch or down a notch to provide a uniform finish.

If you do experiment with steel wool, make sure the floor is dry.

I agree with Ben. Enhancers are tricky at best on travertine because it is so dense. Best solution is to have the entire floor honed (and lightly polished if you wish) to get an even tone.

travertine varies quite a bit in densities, which will dictate the amount of gloss there is when finishing with any given abrasive.

200 grit on classico trav will not produce the same finish as 200 grit on Noce trav.

to match the finish you will most likely to have to call in a professional to do some tests to see if the finish can be achieved, other wise you may end up pulling your hair out and spending a bunch of money on stuff that wont work.
