Summer, summer, summer!! Its baaaaaaack. My summers past are best remembered by the many beach trips I have taken with friends and family members. Growing up in Philadelphia, the Joisey Shore was the place to be. My folks used to take me to Atlantic City long before it was run over by casinos. I saw the diving horse and the Duke Ellington Orchestra at Steel Pier when I was a wee little tot.
When I started dating the person who would become my wife, Ocean City, Wildwood and Seaside Heights were our beaches of choice. We also liked Ocean City, MD. When we moved to Arizona, we ventured to the beaches of San Diego. While quite scenic, I didn't particular like the California beaches The Pacific ocean is way too cold for my liking. Another beach we ventured to was Puerto Penasco, also known as Rocky Point, in Mexico. Its a little known resort area on the Sea of Cortez, that began as a shrimp port. Interesting beach in that you could drive on it, ride horses, shoot fireworks and do just about anything you wanted. Roughly 4-5 hour drive from Phoenix but we were nervous as hell driving through Mexico. Don't know if I would do that again.
Seven years ago, we moved to North Carolina, but until now, we have not set foot on a North Carolina beach. That will change in a few weeks but I'll get back to that in a bit. In our seven years in the Carolina's, we have been to the east and west coasts of Florida including Ft. Lauderdale, Sanibel and Panama City Beach, which is our favorite beach on the American mainland. We have also been to Myrtle Beach (yech!) and back to New Jersey to hang out with my in-laws, nieces and nephews, last summer. The water was barely 60 degrees and we got caught in a hail storm. Needless to say, we aren't going back to Jersey this year, though I do love the boardwalks.
Our very favorite beach so far has been Negril Beach in Jamaica. Gorgeous white sand, clear, warm turquoise water and the neatest people you could ever be around. I've also been to Waikiki Beach in Hawaii and the beaches of Puerto Rico, both when I was a kid. My wife and I intend to get to Hawaii but this time we'll go to Maui. We also want to go to Costa Rica but more for the rainforest than the beaches.
This year however, we've rented a beachfront house in Emerald Isle, NC, which is part of the lower Outer Banks and easily one of NC's most popular beaches. Ocean temps are already up to 80 degrees which for me, is the most important part of the beach trip. The house sleeps 17 which will just be enough to house the many family members that will be coming and going.

So, what are your favorite beaches and where will you be going this year??

Rick - Wow you have gotten around to the beaches haven't you? :) My list is far shorter but here goes...
growing up in WNC Myrtle Beach was THE place to go - can't stand it now. Did the Outer Banks one time for a weekend - don't really remember much about that trip. Grandparents had a house on Edisto Island that I liked alot - very laid back - no commercialism. After high school - I made my way to South Padre Island, Tx - south of Corpus Christi & loved the beaches there - it was the first time I ever got to drive on a beach! Also pretty laid back but with commercialism creep - I tried DC area for a short while but never made any of the beaches in the NE - from there I tried San Diego for a bit & really liked it there but it was a different time in my life. Now I am in Amelia Island, FL just across the GA line - I love it here also - I have done Tampa, Clearwater area & was very impressed with the beaches there also.
Guess I have never visited a beach I didn't like! :)
I've been to Myrtle Beach and your right about the yech. The NC outer banks was pretty nice the couple of times I've been.
In Cali. Pismo Beach is pretty nice. Cold but nice.
In Florida the beach at the tip of Key West is great. Key West is awesome. Did some scuba diving down in Key Largo back in 1997 and bar hopped in Key West on Thanksgiving Day. Had a blast. Barefoot Bob's place was jamming with some free food and live bands. Had a Cheese Burger in Paradise at Jimmy Buffets Margarettaville. Wow, I can still feel the hangover from that day.
But my all time favorite beaches are in Bonaire. Pink Beach at sunset is incredible. The whole damn island is truly paradise. The best diving in world and the most friendly, relaxing place I have ever been.

Rick,
my Family was in Ocean City, NJ last night sending me pictures

hard to top a NJ beach when you come from NJ.

I lived in Guam for four years when growing up and am partial to the many beaches on that island. Gab Gab Beach and Tarague Beach are the two places I remember the best. Gab Gab was a two minute walk from the house while we had to drive to Tarague beach.
Old Orchard Beach in Maine is alright, you just wouldn't want to go in the water, too darn cold!
Ocean City, MD is a good spot. Atlantic City used to be good, before the casinos. Last time i was there was in 1973.
In Florida - Panama City Beach, Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel and Captiva islands are all pretty good.
If my wife would let me we'd move to the US Virgin Islands - St. Croix would be good enough for me!

Caladesi Island State Park is a nice beach. but you take a boat there and nothing is on it.
and you need to head back on the last Ferry or park Rangers take you back.
not what its cracked up to be.
I've been to Coronado Beach in San Diego (http://i43.tinypic.com/nz6et.jpg) also, nice but not really big at all.
lots of nice shopping in Coronado , but very pricey.
Lighthouse Point Park, Daytona Beach is another nothing beach.
nothing there to do but look at the Ponce Deleon Lighthouse and water.
Sarasota beaches are nice with plenty of things to do up
and down the whole West Coast of Florida.

Guam??? That sounds interesting. OC MD used to be nice but the last time we went (late 90's) it didn't seem as nice as it once was. Haven't been back since. PC Beach is amazing! Closest thing to the Caribbean without being in the Caribbean. We almost went back this year but didn't feel like doing the 11 hour drive from NC.
The Sheraton Waikiki fits the bill thank you
Funny you mention that, Jeremy. Thats where I stayed when my parents took me there in the early 70's.

I go to the beach to swim, play beach games and fly kites.

Don't remember the name of the exact beach but I'm gonna go with the one I went to on the south Island of New Zealand. Solely because I could snowboard in the morning then hit the beach later that evening for fire and surfing. Two extremes in one day can't beat ti.

Jersey Shore to Dr. Beach: Who cares?
By Jacqueline L. Urgo -Inquirer Staff Writer
So, Dr. Beach (a.k.a. Stephen P. Leatherman), not one of the beaches along New Jersey's 127-mile coastline is good enough to make your 2009 Top 10 list of the best beaches in the country?
Well, Dr. Beach, Jersey's got two words for you: Who cares?
No one basking yesterday beneath a bright-blue sky on the Garden State's sugary-sand strands seemed to give a seagull's behind about whether you think places like Cape May, Stone Harbor, Sea Isle City, or Margate should make your list.
So what if Jersey's beaches don't rank up there with high-falutin' Hanalei Bay, Kauai, Hawaii - your top pick? Or Siesta Beach in Sarasota, Fla., or Beachwalker Park on Kiawah Island, S.C.?
OK, they're pretty.
But, hey, low blow on Coopers Beach in Southampton, N.Y., and Main Beach in East Hampton, N.Y. Really, come on: New York? None in Jersey, but two in New York?
If the beaches are so great there, how do you account for all the New York cars clogging up the Garden State Parkway?
In Ocean City, where folks are still high off the buzz of being named New Jersey's best beach this week in a survey taken by the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium - presumably people who know a thing or two about Philadelphia's and New York's favorite vacation spots - people actually laughed yesterday at the snub.
And someone even wondered if your little list could be considered a copycat to the Top 10s offered for years by a similarly named, but far more famous, late-night talk-show host.
"Who? Dr. Beach? Leatherman? Never heard of him," said Shaun Miller, 23, an Ocean City surfer, who says he has been all over plying his craft, but likes best the rips and waves of home. "Sounds like a copycat to me, so who cares what he's saying?"
The Miami-based researcher and director of Florida International University's Laboratory for Coastal Research stands by his choices.
"It's really hard to be on the Top 10 list, let's face it," said Leatherman, who has been issuing his sometimes-scathing report since 1991, using 50 criteria including sand quality, cleanliness, safety, and available facilities.
But given issues like water temperature, how did Coast Guard Beach in Cape Cod, Mass., make the list? Average summertime water temperature trails Cape May's by at least 10 degrees.
And you think the Jersey Shore's overdeveloped? Have you seen California? Coronado Beach in San Diego came in No. 4, but Leatherman considers its neighbor, Border Field State Park, where raw sewage from Mexico's Tijuana River sweeps in at high tide, America's worst beach.
"I really don't care what a list like that says," said Fran Stafford of Bensalem, who retired to Cape May a few years ago and spends as much time as she can on the town's beaches with her children and grandchildren.
"I love Cape May. I think New Jersey has some of the most beautiful beaches in the entire world."
Janet and Jeff Gruber, visiting Cape May from Boyertown, Pa., agreed.
"I never listen to surveys and lists like that," Janet Gruber said. "We know what we like, and that's why we come here. I could care less what anybody else says."
In Sea Isle City, the sentiment was a bit more vehement.
"He can take his list and shove it where the sun don't shine," said Frank Montana, an "over-40" South Philly native who has been staying in Sea Isle his entire life. "This state has 120 miles of the best coastline anywhere, and he can't find one beach he likes? Who cares?"

Ok, ummm, whats your favorite beach?? Do share!!! Nice weather today in Emerald Isle. Spent more time in the ocean than the last 3 years put together. We've been seeing dolphins though I've yet to get a picture. Three days left so maybe I'll get a clear shot before its over. Four people leaving tomorrow morning but eight more coming. Good news is; all eight are staying at a local motel. Geez I wish I had my cord for plugging my camera to the computer. We have some great pictures. Oh well.

Back today after one long week at the beach. Emerald Isle was just as beautiful as advertised and except for one stormy day and a couple of windy days with rough seas, the weather was pretty good. The house itself was a bit of a disappointment considering what it cost us. The house was improperly maintained (broken hot tub heater, broken iron, broken vacuum, landscaping that needed maintenance, decking in need of repair, broken Atari console, dirty floors and many more small issues).
When I called the owner of the house, he tried telling me he was only the Realtor when I know for fact that he owns the house. I told him he owed us compensation for misrepresenting the house and the idiot had the balls to offer me discounts for next year. Not sure what I'm going to do yet. My wife says we should start a website to try to let perspective renters know what to expect. After I get my security deposit, I'll weigh my options.
Anyway, when not dealing with house issues or fighting to get the kids to clean up after themselves, we had some great moments. All in all, 29 family members came and went through the house during the week. Most people that slept in the house at one time was 17. My poor wife was running like a chicken without head for most of the week, cleaning and doing laundry. She likes a tidy house and keeping this three story house neat was quite a task. I did my best to help but its hard to kep up with her.
My favorite moments (reflected in the pictures) was the fun we had with my grandson Christian, who will be 4 in September and who had the funnest and most tiring week of his life, and the interaction with the rest of my daughters, in laws, nieces, nephews, friends and wife. On Wednesday, my two brother in laws; Mike and Tim came down with their families. They got arrived later than expected so we wound up getting half a dozen pizza's and having dinner on the beach. Afterwords, we played three intense games of beach volleyball. It was close to ten o clock when we finally came off the beach.
On Thursday, Mike brought 2 dozen each lobster tails and fillet Mignon's for dinner. Tim provided chicken and shrimp for Fridays final meal. Drink wise; we went through enough beer and liquor to supply a small tavern. Fun times for all but we're sooooo glad to be back home. Not sure if we'll ever to an undertaking of those proportions again.

Great pics, Rick. NC beaches are top notch.
Great thread for me to spill the excitement that I just booked a flight to Mexico. A place called playa pascuales (http://sparks-mexico.com/Mex2002/boca-de-pas/index1.htm), with a population of about 125. Beautiful black sand beaches and some of the best surf on Mainland Mexico.

I cannot wait to go back to the NC beaches. While not in the league with the Gulf beaches, they are as good as it gets on the East coast. My only complaint about Emerald Isle would be that its a bit too laid back. Nothing there really except for homes.
Have a great time in Mexico. Hope you're not going with 29 people like we did.

I personally like the beaches that have oceans attached to them. :D

Huntington Beach is where I grew up. I worked at a snack shack on the beach when I was 15 and 16 years old. Nice place to relax.

Here are some pictures from our July trip to Emerald Isle, NC. The best part of the trip was enjoying my grandson who was in his glory.

Today was head high surf from TS Danny. Glassy, clean, lined-up swells from this disturbance peeled down the sandbar in clear 78 degree water. Just me and 4 or 5 other buddies for about 6 hours. I love Buxton, NC.

The majority of our work is right on the beaches of the Oregon Coast.. I have lived here all my life and I still get taken by it.

Kate,
Good seeing you around. I was impressed by the by the beaches of L.I. I'd like to return if I could afford it.:D
Trask,
Every once in awhile my wife and I ponder where we could live beside here. Oregon always seems to be in the top 3. Beautiful vistas. Good surf too. I might call ya in a few years to see if you need any help.

I agree Brian:D
Dan there is actually a very active surf culture here..but my Brother in law Dave would not like me talking about it in public. I guess if you surf you understand the subtle nature of those sub cults..takes time to get accepted.

yep, theres some real good breaks here in Oregon but you got to know where they are and not alot of people are willing to tell you as Trask has pointed out.
I know of a couple of spots where you will get rocks thrown at you while your in the water if you cant ride or "prove your worth"
Before moving to portland 10 years ago, i grew up on the south coast and spent lots o' days in the water, it can be good and bad just as every where though, and rather "sharky" cause most of the good spots are near estuaries where salmon runs are great. If you dont like cold water and close-outs, Oregon aint the place for ya.
