A major disappointment!!:sick::mad:

As my 89 year old mother in law said this afternoon, "Looks like he let his crotch do his thinking!"

Note that civilization and society did not break down in South Carolina in the absence of the governor (the media seemed a little panicky, though). I think you folks should endeavor to see how long you can make it with no governor at all.:)

I find it funny (in a repulsive way) that they always whine and apologize after the fact. What a total loser!!

I almost think he wanted rto get caught, relieving him from the pressure of being prodded into a possible presidential primary run, or even running for re-election as Governor.

C'mon, did he really think he could leave the continent to go shag his chiquita and no one would find out? Ummmmm., passport records, anyone? Homeland security, NSA, CIA?

A quick flight to a hotel in Omaha would have worked.

I thought having an affair or at least banging an intern is what politicians do.?

I mean besides stashing bribery cash in the freezer.

How about cleaning out the whole legislature. Biggest bunch of "good ole boys" I've ever seen. Fought constantly with the governor and spent like there was no end. Overrode every veto he ever made, just to show him who was boss. And the majority and the governor are all Republicans. Sanford was more of a libertarian, though. Oh, and they appoint the State Supreme Court justices too.

Last 5 (guess which political party) cheaters got a total of 1.2 minutes of combined airtime on all major broadcasts. So by my estimation . . . this "Republican" cheater should be covered multiple times per day per network, for at least 2 weeks, with follow ups, news stories and comedy routines, TV trucks camped in front of his home, and should be no less than a combined 670 minutes of coverage of this hypocrite.

http://blogs.forrester.com/charleneli/images/2007/06/04/satellite_trucks_2.jpg

(guess which party) cheat and its news. (Guess the other party) cheat and its a resume enhancer.

No wonder CBS/ABC/NBC ratings are in the tank, they forget that there are more important things going on right now.

For instance - the first Cap in Trade vote comes this Friday. You gonna contact your senators and reps?

actually, Kevin, the most important thing for the MSM today is to NOT report on what's going down in DC. :sheep:

Kevin, ease up on all that Democrat and Republican rubbish please.

Sanford and sin. I loved that line on the news :D

But why the hell did he choose a mujer from Argentina? Don't they have Latinas in his neck of the wood? That would be sooooo much easier.

My real feeling on this issue is that it should be handled privately i.e. between husband and wife.

Oh and Shaughnn's friend Dan Moit discoverred Mark Sandford's hiding place several days ago and published it on Facebook.

"Spitzer was in the news cycle on / off for weeks."

Spitzer was hiring a prostitute. That is different than an extramarital affair.

Just to set the record straight, Sanford didn't "tell" anyone that he was going hiking. He dropped misleading hints to his staff and let them deduce that incorrectly. He had also first met this woman eight years ago and their casual e-mail exchanges grew into something much more complicated over the years until it became a full-fledged extra-marital affair. Lastly, Sanford's wife has known about the affair for a few months and the agreed on a temporary separation a couple of weeks ago.
This is an issue between Sanford and his immediate family. If he's done anything *wrong*, in my opinion, it was only that he was out of the country without his staff having any means of contacting him in the event that vital stat's business needed addressing. That's about the only thing, in my mind, that might suggest that he step down as governor. The fact that he was one of the loudest condemners of President Clinton's affair, while falling prey to the very same temptation, is only a matter of gross hypocrisy.
What people do in their own bedrooms, or on a yatch off the coast of Argentina, is their own business. The fact that you all are letting the gossip-news pundits fan this into something more significant suggests that they just might have too much influence over your opinions, in general.
No story here. Move along.
Just my $0.01.

Two separate issues here.

Issue 1: The affair. I agree with Shaughnn that this is something that he will have to deal with personally and that we ought to leave him alone.

Issue 2: Leaving the state AND country without letting anyone know where he is. There are very specific steps that the governor is supposed to take if he is going to be unavailable to perform the duties of governor. He did not take these. There are also some serious questions about use of state property and state funds in this whole mess. These need to be answered and dealt with.

Why do politicians cheat?

Why do men in power — the ones on pedestals — think they are above us and can get away with cheating on their spouses, particularly when media scrutiny is so intense and peccadilloes are arguably more politically damaging than in the past?

There's a long list of those who thought they could jet off to Argentina, or cruise on the Monkey Business, or check into a hotel under an assumed name or use an escort service and never get caught, never have to come clean.

The names quickly come to mind — South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., Sen. David Vitter, R-La., former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., one-time Democratic presidential hopefuls John Edwards and Gary Hart, former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, current New York Gov. David Paterson.

These days, the fallout can run the gamut. It can doom a career — former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey — or unleash the fury of a special prosecutor, leading to impeachment — then-President Bill Clinton.

This wasn't always the way it was. There are politicians, presidents even, who did the dalliance dance privately and didn't pay publicly, John F. Kennedy and Franklin D. Roosevelt included.

During the Clinton/Lewinski kerfluffle, the then-President of Italy was amused by our pandemonium over the affair. He said, in an interview, that power has always been the ultimate aphrodisiac. He also said that most of Europe was amused by our preoccupation with sex and all things sexual.
We're just too immature of a nation to get past the booby jokes.

Shaughnn.....Interesting perception of these events.

I am moderately conservative, but I can't say that I agree with your analysis. While I agree that some things belong behind closed doors, I think we need to realize that the Governor is a public figure (and in this case at least, a very vocal one). When anyone steps into the public limelight, the rules change. There is no longer any expectation of privacy.

There is a lot that could be said here. Perhaps another time. ;)

Well, its not like he was Governor of Alaska, who's duties, we all know, include givin' the Russians a steely-eyed look of determination every time they even think about crossing the border; but you'd think if he was leaving the continent he'd make sure his cell phone would still work. I have no clue if my cheap phone/service would work in Argentina but that's because I ain't going. If I was going I'd be bothered to find out and upgrade if necessary.

As to the affair, since its clear it didn't involve barnyard animals, I could care very little. Really I only care cause its funny to see someone who screamed for President Clinton's resignation hoisted on his own petard.

Oh, and if there was a 9/11 caliber emergency in South Carolina in his absence, I'd bet any sitting President would have no qualms about ordering the Air Force to dispatch a two seat F-15 to bring this guy back to his state at Mach 3. He was in Argentina, not on Neptune.
