Just got this from British Airways. What chance this happening if their stock price wasn't in the toilet?
Dear Mr wright,
As you may be aware, British Airways experienced a major disruption at London Heathrow between 18 July and 21 July 2003. The disruption was due to unofficial industrial action taken by London Heathrow Terminal 1 and Terminal 4 staff in response to plans to introduce Automated Time Recording ( ATR ), an electronic system which requires employees to swipe in and out at the start and end of their shifts. ATR is about implementing a system for 2,500 people that is already in use by 20,000 British Airways staff, and we are simply moving from a paper-based system to an electronic version.
Because the staff walked out unofficially and without warning, we struggled to provide the level of support that our customers have
come to expect. The operation returned to normal once the staff returned to work, however there was a long back-log of 90,000
customers who still needed to travel and it took us some time to accommodate those passengers.
We aim to ensure this never happens again and are currently revising our contingency plans in the unlikely event of a recurrence at some time in the future.
We are very pleased to have reached an amicable agreement with the trade unions all of whom have agreed to withdraw the threat of industrial action. This is good news for our Executive Club members and other customers, who can now book British Airways with confidence. It's good news for our staff and shareholders too.
If you were unfortunate enough to have your travel plans disrupted during this time, we recognise how upsetting and frustrating this must have been for you and unreservedly apologise. If you incurred any expenses or have any outstanding claims for compensation, please contact us as per the details below where your claim will be given our highest priority.
