And I don't mean the one in the bottom of the bottle of tequila:D :D

I had that friggin virus on my home machine. Took me about 5 reboots before I was able to complete the downloads of MS's patch & Symantec's wormbuster. PITA

Anyway, I'm clean again, & happy I did not have the problem at the office's network.

The entire MD department of Motor Vehicles was shut down due to Blaster.exe today. Pretty hilarious to see TV footage of no lines at the DMV.

I subscribe to McAfee VirusScan and ZoneAlarm (cable modem)... yesterday McAfee sent me an "Update Now" message... I never hesitate to download the updates... That update is protecting my computer from the virus.
I was a little concerned this morning when I work up and the screensaver was black and my ZoneAlarm had a big X through it and was shut down.... very strange... I rebooted the computer and everything seems to be fine so far.
My old computer got infected with the Kak.worm... what a PITA... I now check for critical updates/security patches at microsoft.com at least weekly and always download the McAfee updates when prompted.
My mom has a dail up connection and has never downloaded an update... she mostly just plays games on the computer and uses Yahoo Mail.... hasn't really had any problems with a virus, but I think it's only a matter of time....

I get so much friggin spam that I end up deleting many real and important emails. I will not open an email with an attachment, unless I get a confirmation from the guy that it is OK.

I am getting really paranoid...............

Black Helicopters are coming...............

I received this from McAfee today. It sounds like you don't even need to open an email or download an attachment to get infected.

W32/Lovsan.worm is a Medium-On-Watch Internet Worm.

This worm spreads by exploiting a recent vulnerability in
Microsoft Windows. The worm scans random ranges of IP
addresses on TCP port 135. Discovered systems are targeted. Exploit code is sent to those systems, instructing them to
download and execute the file MSBLAST.EXE from a remote
system via TFTP.

Once run, the worm creates the registry key (may be either
of the following):

* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Run "windows auto update" = msblast.exe
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Run "windows auto update" = msblast.exe I
just want to say LOVE YOU SAN!! bill

Indications of Infection

- Presence of unusual TFTP files
- Presence of the file msblast.exe in the WINDOWS SYSTEM32
directory
- Error messages about the RPC service failing (causes
system to reboot)

IMPORTANT SECURITY NOTE: Up-to-date McAfee VirusScan users
are protected from this threat. For dial-up connections,
we also recommend McAfee Personal Firewall Plus. An extra
layer of protection, it helps render your system invisible
to malicious code and break-ins like Lovsan.

Talk about APITA, my wife's laptop got the worm while we were traveling, and I thought I had deleted and fixed it. Well, Microsoft and Symantec told my bride that whoever the knucklehead was that only did a portion of cleanup was the true culprit.

Although it is true I was on vacation, I thought I had taken care of it. The recriminations are still coming even though it is clean now.

Not only do I get yelled at as tile and stone contractor for what my people do or don't do it seems that I bat a thousand as the computer adminstrator as well.

Glad to know that at least I am a consistently incompetent boob.

ROFLMAO

fortunately no worm here, just hardware issues in the past 3 weeks.

Finally figured... uhhh why not use my web space as backup???? Got the writeable CD today, but I think it's a shot in the foot in my case.

Which worm right??? It seems liike every other day there's a new one to be concerned about! I love my freedom...but I sure wish there were a better way to curtail these pains in the arse! SHEESH!

My puter's been acting out in all sorts of crazy ways...but I've scaned at least 5 times with a clean bill of health!

TRUELY a PITA!

make sure your definitions are up to date, if you're scanning with old defs, you won't find it.

ain't nothin' wrong with usin' worms for fishin'.

Odd... I spent some time as a marine guide, of sorts, and even saltwater sp of fish can hardly resist a good, fat worm. ;)

Yoolall be pleezed no dowt that Doo buy ground to a halt electronically these past 2 days. we got walloped big style. IT types (Faux nerds?) doing the headless chicken whilst the rest of us fume and curse them all roundly.
Seems to be sorted for now tho. Oh the joys of living under a monopoly (aka Etisalat) ISP.

Sonnie...yep...those Salmon will occaisionally go for them!

We have sumthin out here called pier worms. They build crusty tubes on the pilings and such. Some of the fisher people dig them out and use them as cheap bait. They work...but mostly catch little bottom fish like flounder. Out here...most of those are filled with tiny worms...making them inedible.

Linda,

Have you ever tried pop gear and worms for silver salmon? Or are there any silver left in the pond? :)

fishinfarmgirl

Silvers YES John! Some NICE ones! Remember???

Pop gear though I don't know about. I that using a dink float??? I've done that for chums!

Pop gear may be ancient technology by now. A string of reflectors like "spoons" is run along a steel leader with a treble hook at the end. You troll at low speed with it. The other thing we used to use was a dodger and herring. Now you gotta ax me what a dodger is.

:D:D:D:D

For hours I've looked at John's post as "steel ladders" instead of "Steel leaders". No wonder it didn't make any sense. OK, I'll bite...... what's a dodger?

 flatfloor! :D

A dodger is a very spensive piece of plastic or metal that I have a knack for hanging up on rocks and seaweed or having tornoff my line by hungry seals! :( Usually right after I replaced the LAST one! :shades:

OK...now I remember what pop gear is John! It's the same way they fish for walleye over here!

I catch a TON of silvers using a herring fillet. Cut the top at a nice angle for a good spin...loop your hook through the point and back through the side. Let out a TON of line with the kicker goin' at a hefty rate...cut the speed and troll till the herring does a death spiral spin. Fish in 5-20 feet of water. Best when you can see the pebbles on the bottom. Wait for your fish...and HAVE FUN!!!

L :D

Blackberries are at the eatin' stage which is the sign that the BIG bad boy Kings are comin' down the pike and the silvers are ready to show in numbers! Also the Canadian Honkers are beginning their migration...another good sign for Silver/Coho fishin'! :D

Okay, well this is another sign of passing. :)

When I was a kid there were no walleyes in Washington State to my knowledge. Apparently, Easterners have brought them in in their infernal drive to civilize the West. :D

I fished for all the bottom fish you named earlier, and my mom cooked them. There were salmon in the Sound and rock cod and other cod. Small halibut, flounder, and ocean perch. And there were bullheads that we cut up and used for bait. Nobody but Japanese people ate bullheads.

In the lakes there were crappie and several kinds of trout. As well as catfish. In the rivers there were several kinds of trout, spawning salmon and steelheads in certain estuaries.

But there were no $#^%^%#&$$%$ walleye!

:D

When I was a kid...I remember seeing a crappie or two...floating in the community swimming pool.

Tim....

anyone from CO can't possibly know what a sac-a-lait is... they were probably dead flounder from WA.

All our flounder down here are succulent and fought over at the local fish markets. :)

Must be the drainage from all the StarBucks up there....

Eating seafood in the Gulf Coast region is an education for a guy who grew up by the Pacific Ocean. Down here there are fish I'd never heard of that are delightful to eat. Monk fish are my favoite and of course the most expensive. :)

John,

How are the oysters?
Chesapeake Bay oysters used to be some of the best available in the county, but pollution & disease has caused a major decline.
The last time I was able to get my fill of osters on the 1/2 shell was about 10 years ago in Na'wlins. Acme Oyster House, IIRC

kemguru... crappie floating in the swimming pool! :D

Oh BOY John are there ever Walleyes over here now! Mostly in Eastern Washington though! There's a pretty big group that fishes Walleye exclusively!

BOTTOM FISH!!! Oh yes! Good eatin'! MOST of them! The Rock Cod are great, learned a new one a few years ago called Greenling! Strange greenfish...but yummy! Ling Cod are delectable and I have learned how to fish for them! Big old bucket mouths.

A friend taught me how to jig for herring. (That's how you get the Ling Cod) Herring aren't usually available at the tackle shops the time of year that Ling season is...so you HAVE to catch your own! Hook up a live herring on and dangle it in front of their lair. It seims around franticly trying to get off the hook. Soon as your rod jumps outa yer hand...you have a fight on!

I even tried cooking up a DOGFISH one time...I'd heard that was what they made fish and chips out of in England. Got the thing on my boat (then a 12 footer)...my son and I bashed the heck out of it. It still flopped around the deck of the boat. Sandpaper skin...creepy eyes...awful teeth! ;) Even cut the HEAD offa the thing and his tail STILL kept moving! THEN you have to skin the things on acounta the pee through their skin. (apparently THEY need to learn to sit as well!) Too oily and soft for me. No thanks! Sorry you Brits! :shades:

I have YET to hook a Steelhead...not that I haven't tried NUMEROUS times with my oldest son. The upside of gettin' skunked on the river is the beauty all around ya though! :D

Don't forget the OYSTERS and CLAMS! YUM! We have butter clams and steamers and gooey ducks at minus tides! Remember those John???

BULLHEADS! :( Pain in the butt when you're silver fishin'! They stay in close and near the bottom and grab my herring whilst it spins it's way along the shore! GREAT to use as bait for cut throat trout! Make a pristine fillet of them and spin it close to shore. Now that is a nummy eating fish! Catch and release only now though! Gorgeous fish...just beautiful coloration!

Now Mary Land...that's where I rememebr the great Blue Crab and eating soft shell Blue Crab. My dad always called the local newspaper "The Crab Wrapper". On the Eastern shore of Mary Land you'd go to a crab house and they'd give you multiple layers of newspaper piled high with the delectable Blue Crab which were steamed in spices...then they'd hand you a wooden mallet and send you to a picnic table outside! Fun memories!

Oh...MONK FISH! SO TASTEY! A little garlic butter with a squeeze of lemon...Heaven! Poor man's lobster!
