View Full Version : Darned Yankees stole one of our Seattle Mariners!

So we lost Nelson to our arch rivals...the New York Yankees. Makes no sense. Our main competitors need a closer or a setup guy and they take someone from their competition in the league? Hmmmm????
But then 'Nelly' DID go shootin' his mouth off about the M's not trading anyone before the deadline and all. Yadda yadda yadda. Maybe the upper office guys were sick of having a loose cannon and sent him back to where they got him!
Anyway...it's a moot point 'cause the SEATTLE MARINERS are gonna take the Yankees this year! (they'd BETTER!) :D

The Mariners are exactly like the Stros. Play just enough baseball to keep from getting run out of town.

It's been a pretty good season! Good group this year. I like the new head coach! I'm hopin' they can pull it off! But the competition is closing in!

Don't worry about the Yanks, they're done, they're toast, its pretty much all over for them, 'cept for the cryin'. Want proof, look at Georgie Porgie's comments from when we spanked 'em ten days ago. More proof, the Nelson trade. They are runnin' scared and are about to miss the playoffs for the first time since '95. Just be carefull about that arch rival talk, you want to be their arch rivals? You'll have to get in line.

Nelson's ERA with runners in scoring position is like 18 for the season. Benietez(sp?) has always been a choke artist. The trade deadline passed before this deal happened, which means any team in the AL east or AL west could have blocked it. Nobody cared. I can't say how Seattle's gonna do (I hope they do great THIS weekend) but the Yanks are done.
fishinfarmgirl
08-08-2003, 10:20 AM
It frustrates the heck out of me. We (the Seattle Mariners) get juuuuuust about there and then can't seem to kickit all the way over the edge for the whole deal.
Don't know what it is. Same with the Soncis over the years and Football...yech...don't even....... :(
I know our pitching was awful a numebr of years ago...but we've pulled together a well rounded team at the moment. FABULOUS defensive team...and when they're in teh groove, damned good offensively as well. The Nelly deal didn't really bug me...just stirin' up trouble. I don't think his being gone is gonna have much, if any effect! We'll see.

I'm not a Yankee fan! how dare you!
BTW, do you remember where Nelson was (no, not in the British Navy) before he was a Mariner? He was a Yankee.
As far as Benitez is concerned you can have him. I don't want to start listing the key games he has blown for the Mets. The man cannot take pressure. Took the Yankees 3 weeks to figure that out.

flatfloor, before Nelson was a yankee the first time, he was a mariner. M's traded him to the Yankees in about 1995 for Sterling Hitchcock I believe (another glory moment in Seattle Baseball history). :wtf: So this is the second time he has been traded from the M's to the yanks.
People get attached to Nelson because he is a quality setup guy, speaks his mind and is good in the community. That being said, they tried to use him as a closer this year and he just plain failed. Benitez has ~200 career saves, Nelson has ~20. Sasaki is hurt.
Arthur Rhodes is the only left handed Mariner reliever. BA this season for left handed hitters - vs. Nelson, .281; vs. Benitez .239.
BA this season with runners in scoring position, vs. Nelson .419; vs. Benitez .192
Seattle needs to GET TO the postseason; we can deal with the alleged Benitez big-game-blowup syndrome then.
On a really fundamental level, Seattle traded a pretty good 36 year old setup guy for a pretty good 30 year old closer. Neither one is signed for next year, so we also don't have to listen to Nelson whine in the offseason
Hope you're right about the Yankees. hate em hate em hate em.

The Red Sox just had a huge victory in Oakland. Tied it in the ninth and won it in the tenth. Next: The Mariners. I foresee a serious case of whiplash for Moyer tomorrow, caused by him turning his head real fast to watch all the HR's depart.:stick:
The best part: Me getting to sleep at a reasonable hour. No ten o'clock game tonight.

I was just commenting on flatfloor's obvious disdain of Benitez' post season performance. At least the Mets have been to several World Series. It's kind of like how WE feel about Jose Mesa. Any Phillies fans care to help pile in on Joe Table?

Speaking of past Mets glories  The local Mets channel is showing the Mets v (of all people) Houston Astros 86 playoff game. Mets won but really anybody could have, 16 innings of hard nosed, bite your nails baseball. Many, myself included, think it was the greatest post season game ever played.

So it's starting to look real likely that a team from MA will win the World Series:eek: The Little League World Series, that is.:D Tough break for the Texas boys, I thought they had it wrapped in the seventh. The kids from Saugus, MA move on to the Quarter finals, and they already beat their next oponent once in the semis. Man, those kids turn the DP better than the Sox.

08-21-2003, 10:15 PM
He reported flu like symptoms last night. That could be true or not. Pedro is supremely effective on the mound; but, sometimes it's a bit of a process getting him there. He's bad on four day's rest, and when he goes significantly more than 100 pitches, he's bad on his next start. They adjusted things last week to make sure he'd pitch in both halves of a home and homer we have coming up against the Yanks. Nothing against the Mariners, but I doubt they'd mess that up just to move him from a start against Oakland to one against Seattle. Both those teams are contenders; but, it ain't personal. It's VERY, VERY personal against NY
Anyway, with the Sox loosing the first two against the A's at home, all of us in Red Sox Nation were looking to commit suicide yesterday. Two heartbreakers. They came up big tonight, hopefully that means they're ready for the Mariners. We'll see.

Big series this weekend between the M's and the Red Sox. Some folks in Seattle are getting exasperated with Bob Melvin's management of the bullpen - he has failed to define roles very well, and neither Sasaki nor Benitez seem suited to setup roles. Yet, Hasegawa has been untouchable as closer. And the bats are frail lately. But it is great to be in a pennant race this late (do they still call it a pennant race with all these teams making the playoffs?). :wtf:
Doesn't the similarity between Bosox and Botox bother you a bit? :D:D

They just had a telethon here in Beantown today, the Jimmy Fund. Kids and cancer, what a crappy mix :(
Anyhoo, in one day the team and its fans raised over 900 K:cool:
They've done this for years, as a matter of fact the team sold a little over a year ago for somewhere around 800 mil. Most went to the Jimmy fund, All would be well, 'cept George Steinbrenner, the hated owner of the Yanks, had to go and pledge 10 grand to the cause  How do you hate him when he goes and pulls a dirty trick like that?;)

Well good for old George S.! That was a pretty nice gesture if you ask me!
Now about this weekend..... ;) M's have their work cut out for them for sure. I am hoping for a good show of the bats this time around! Fingers crossed! As to the bull pen...HOW many years we been gripin' about the friggin bullpen? The pitching is far superior to what it has been in the past at least! But man...to be honest...I hold my breath sometimes as I see a mess happening in the 8th inning. YIKES!

Now, if only the Yankees would start loosing, it would be The good guys(Sox), Seattle, Oakland, and some crappy team from the central division in the playoffs. btw Todd, or anyone from MIN, why the heck did you guys give up David Ortiz? He's been a godsend here, 20 hr's, batting over .300, and perhaps most importantly, he's batting over .400 after a walk to 160 million dollar man, Manny Ramirez. Last season, Ramirez contended for the lead in walks, he'd get up with guys in scoring position, and off to first he'd go, we had nobody to protect him before. I'm wondering, Did Ortiz make fun of icefishing  or something? why else would you guys just send this terrific player packing?

I was at yesterday's debacle at Fenway. Everything was perfect, except for the starting pitching, the entire bullpen, and several guys I'd never heard of in the lineup :bang: Ok, I guess that just leaves the weather, but believe me, that was PERFECT :D
I can't believe that tickets for this weekend's series with the Yanks were harder to come by than tickets for Springsteen's upcoming concert. It'll be the first ever concert at the park. I guess brothers in law are good for somethin' after all. The Sox will rise like a Phoenix from these ashes, I still have faith. no, no, no, no, no! The curse is a fallacy. They've had Babe Ruth's daughter on TV many, many times. She's certain her daddy would never be so uncouth as to put a curse on anybody!
Nobody's ever been rude enough to ask her about his supposed behavior at all the houses with the red lights out front though

Steve, its not like those guys beat up the groundskeeper with a bat. :D
sdaniels7114
10-23-2003, 10:20 AM
I think the major reason this is being pursued is because they did it in front of two Boston Policemen. One was a uniformed officer the other was a detective. I'm not sure if the detective wore anything to give away that he was a cop; but, both were working the game. Each stepped out onto the field between 1/2 innings and so forth. Even though the groundskeeper guy was beaten pretty badly, he had puncture wounds from the players' cleats on his back and legs, I think they're going to court because of a lack of respect for the cops present. The groundskeeper had been cheering for the Sox in THEIR bullpen, one might say he got what he asked for, especially if one is a Yankee fan. In the end, you can't show up a cop in front of thousands of people and expect it to just be forgotten.
