Dave, you have my sympathy! I'm very sensitive to it too. Last bad case I got from romping with a friends Akita/Husky mix dog. I ended up with a prescription cortisone cream before it cleared up. No fun.

Stoner,

You can use some stuff made by Amway called LOC. Use it to wash the affected area (don't get it in your eyes) and dry it well. What the LOC does is help dry up the poison ivy, also either you or get your wife to change the sheets everyday. What keeps the PI going is the oils of it get on the sheets and you keep laying in it every night re-infecting yourself.

Next, spray weed killer on that PI.:loaded:

Hope you get better soon.

When I was a logger I used to get it all the time, I would soak in the bathtub, and scrub it with Fells Naptha soap ( helps dry it out ) then some cortizone cream, or calimine after you get out.

Hope you didn't use the bathroom right after.:D

Take an allergy pill, helps with the itching.:)

I feel for you...

Go to the doc and get a course of steroid treatment if it gets really bad- the only thing that I can use to help with it as I seem to super reactive to it now- never got the stuff until I was in my 30's, now if I get it I cant get rid of it. Some benadryl and steroids is the remedy for me...

Brush-B-Gone by ortho works on the stuff, and then hire a landscaper to remove the dead(but still toxic) - if you do it yourself throw away gloves, clothes that you wore.

I hear Tecnu products from Tec Labs (http://www.teclabsinc.com/product-categories.cfm?id=1E8FDCC1-F136-4EBF-EF2DA11F1E0BAEB8), are very effective. I know some firefighters in Northern California that swear by the stuff. They also swear by Lava soap for washing up immediately after even suspected exposure.

Luckily I don't get poison ivy, or oak. At least not yet. They say each exposure puts you a little closer to being vulnerable. I have been exposed hundreds of times.

Years ago while working as a landscaper in Calaveras county California, myself and a co-worker literally weed whacked a couple acres of poison oak seedlings. Stopping to wash with Lava soap every half hour or so. I got nothing, and the other guy got just about a dime sized patch on his arm. Stuff must work.

I get poison ivy just thinkin' about it.... always been that way.

Both my sons walk near the stuff on a hot, humid day and catch it from the humidity in the air.

Greg has pin pointed the right stuff... Tecnu (http://www.teclabsinc.com/product-categories.cfm?id=1E8FDCC1-F136-4EBF-EF2DA11F1E0BAEB8).... at least for me.

Once I catch PI I'm a gonner’ so..... if I even think I’ve been near the stuff its shower and a double Tecnu wash for me.

If I do get PI.... Tecnu holds it down to a dull roar till Cortaid cream and Cortisone pills begin to work their magic.

Remember the song: Poisoon' I-vieeey', poisoon' I-vieeey'.... late at night when yer' sleepin' poision ivy comes a-creepin' a-around'.

got some PI a couple of years ago, and when I couldn't shake it broke down and went to my skin doc. He said none of that stuff really works. He 'splained why and I've forgotten, and prescribed some creme stuff that knocked the PI on its ars. Never seen anything like it. Unfortunately I don't recall the name and I'm not home to look at the tube. (I think I still have it.)

The stuff I use is called FRST (correct spelling) I knew a guy that made it up in Astoria OR. but you can't get it any more. It doesn't cure the pi but it gives imidiate relief from the pain. The main ingredient was cod liver oil. It was a miracle ointment though. Sunburns, pi, poison oak, cement burns anything like that it handled good and quick.

A steel brush worked for me!
(I had it so bad on my arms once, I looked like an alligator. I had chopped down a thick 2" vine, wondering what it was while I carried the pieces in my arms to the garbage bag ... !)
Nothing else worked - not the creams, not the lotions, not even the cortisone shots. Steel brush until my arms were raw - took away the itch, then just had to deal with the pain.:tup1:
Then I discovered ZANFEL, which actually washes away the poison ivy oil (Urushiol). It's expensive (around $40 for a 1 oz. tube) but it works for me.

And remember ... "LEAVES OF THREE - LET THEM BE!";)

we got Poison oak out here on the west coast and as a kid playing in the mountians all the time Id get it alot. Simplest cure I know is to go jump in the ocean and swim around alittle, the salt water will dry that stuff right up.

Or if ya got it real bad or theres no ocean by ya, go the the doctor and get the shot, cures it up in a couple days.

As I understand it, a reaction to poison ivy is an allergic reaction. Apparently, I'm not allergic to it. I've never deliberately come in contact with it, but I don't see how I could have avoided it all these years.

Yeah the oil is an acidic product that some apparently aren't allergic to.And fo us others the more we come in contact the worse it gets.

I used to be a hardcore mountain biker and half the time I was battling poison ivy. Best product I've found is "ZANFEL" It works as advertised but if you have a super bad case of it head to the hospital and drop trow! The rash will start to go away in a matter of hours but the bill for being impatient is big!

If i know i'm in it i can usually take care of it but it was dark and i had no idea,so it festered all night.

I was severely allergic to PI. Whenever I got it I typically would end up in the hospital on a IV drip. It would some how get into my blood stream and go to town. This seemed to happen once a year. But for the past few years I have been taking a PI pill and I haven't had it since. The pill has PI in it but it doesn't affect me. You take the pill first of the season before you get PI and thats it.

If I wasn't walking proof I would call myself a liar:) I will find out if they are available and will post a picture.
