Was in Homer's yesterday getting some thinset, and I see a tile setting clinic going on. I stand and check it out for a minute. Guy is troweling mastic onto a piece of 1/4" hardi and slapping some tile down...having a grand ol time.

One of the homeowners asks, "how can I cut the hole for my shower valve? I'm using 12" porcelain tiles" The HD guy doesn't miss a beat, says "this is what I would use" and whips out this: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100659792

I use a hammer and hit it really fast so it makes a perfect hole the size of the hammers head.

I was hoping the link would lead me to a hammer. That would of been real funny.

Come on, Brannigan. :stick: You shoulda paid for a single 12" piece of porcelain and brought it back to the guy during the demo asking him to show everybody how it works. Now that woulda been entertaining. :yeah: Whoops....sorry folks, this'll jus' take a second...nope......okay, I got it this time.......uh, nope......maybe I needa 'nother drill.........no, I think I gotta spin it faster.......ah, crap, that's gonna need stitches.

I saw that same demonstration one time at the Depot. Guy was spreading mastic on a sheet of half-inch plywood, though. Had it laying across a couple saw horses. Every time he'd place a tile the board would bow downward. Really a sight to see. Fortunately, no one asked about cutting a hole. :D

What was really depressing is that he had about twenty people in his audience.

Heh heh, that's a good one. :D

All joking aside, I bought one of these (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100654422) from Homer. I was in a pinch and didn't have much hope for it, but twenty or so holes later, it's still going strong. Don't use the pilot bit (I never use the pilot bit), just drill a hole in a piece of cbu and use that for your guide. :)

I drill a pilot hole with a diamond bit first. I find the pilot drill that comes with those above shown bits are TOO soft and bend real easy. Instead of use CBU for a guide I make one out of a piece of plywood or such. Hammy

I use the plywood trick also Hammy, I just find the cbu more convenient since you can use the diamond hole saw to make the guide. :)

Another little trick I tried recently, is to cut a plug out of an old sponge and insert it into the hole saw, dip it in water, and viola, wet hole saw.

I like that idea. Another thing i do is take a soda bottle, punch a small hole in it with a nail near the bottom. fill the bottle with water and gravity will give you a small steady stream of water. Put the top back on the bottle and the stream stops. Hammy
