View Full Version : Sleep Number or Tempurpedic?

No, this is not a joke. My bed sucks! Darn thing is ten years old and my wife and I both have sleeping issues that we blame on the mattress. Next up, the Tempurpedic Swedish foam mattress or the air filled Sleep Number. Both are extremely pricey so I need some feedback from those who have experience.
Please don't suggest a water bed. Been there, done that. Never again!!!

Tempurpedic type beds suck worse than a waterbed.

Go with the sleep number.

Sleep number all the way. Use to wake up sore and aching. After 4k no more. Number 50 here...:tup1:

We just bought a new Serta that replaced our old one. (Didn't know we had bought the same mattress brand until we got it home!) And yes, your old mattress is the casue of your sleeping problems. This was certainly true in our case.

As far as the two you are suggesting. I only have experience with the sleep number. I slept on it at a girlfriend's house and it was pretty amazing.

The bean bag mattresses suck.
We have a sleep number. I like it but my wife hates it. My side sits way down like a hammock and she's sitting way up. Then she rolls over.
If you get it don't go cheap. Get the little dial number thing instead of just guessing and get the box spring also instead of using your own.

We've had a sleep number for over 10 years and love it. We got it discounted, I think it was one that was sold and returned. Might want to check and see if they still do that, the savings was pretty good. :)

I've only slept on Tempurpedic a couple of times but thought they were pretty good. When we visit Albuquerque we stay at a hotel that has them (Hotel Blue). First night was a little strange, but fine after that. I suspect there's an adjustment period when you've slept on conventional types all your life.

Yes, and an even better reason is they are a sponsor of the Rush Limbaugh program. :D Truth be told, I like both shows.

I'll be following this thread with great interest since I too have sleeping problems. :tup2:

I've had my sleep number since 2000. I would never own another bed. Ive moved a lot and both of the air bladders got little holes at one point or another. The first one fell under complete warranty and they shipped new one right away got it in three days. The second one just happened and 9 years later I just payed 61.99 for new bladder. And that price is now good for another 20 years. Plus depending on how my back feels (as I broke it years ago) I can adjust I go from 25 (real soft) some nights to 70 (real hard) on other nights. And my change doesn't effect my lady at all. If you do get one get the one with seperate remotes for both sides though. then you can velcrow them to the wall/bedframe on each side of the bed and never bother each other adjusting to your comfort.

Hi Rick,

Doesn't one company or the other have a free trial period? For that kind of money, I'd want to try both and go with the one that best works for you.

We have the adjustable beds that you can raise and lower your head or knees. Works great for me. I'ts like sleeping in your favorite reclining chair. Great if you have breathing, sinus, or back problems. Works by remote control and has massage feature, too. You also can use the Tempurpedic mattress on the adjustables.

We don't have the Tempurpedic, but Marge did buy a 4" memory foam topper (under $200 for a king size) and that has made a huge difference in sleep quality. The memory foams do hold in your body heat more than I like, a big negative for some, but man, is it comfortable.

Hi Dave
I know that one of them gives you 30 days. Not sure if they both do. We have also considered the memory foam topper but I'm afraid we'll still need to replace the bed.

I have had a Tempurpedic for more than 5 years and I love it. I have stated to friends it is probably one of the best purchases I have ever made. A friend of mine recently bought one and he's impressed with his as well.

I've read from some people that temurpedics are good as long as you lay still but as soon as you turn over; the bed has to re-mold itself around your body.

Rick,

If that's happening I'm unaware of it. One of the beauties of the Tempurpedic is that it totally supports you everywhere. I have literally woken up in the exact same position as when I went to sleep. I think there is far less movement/turning over with the Tempurpedic mattress.

Same here, Laz. We bought the topper and I sleep just fine. The wife is lobbying for a new mattress of late.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the mattress we have, but I didn't stay married for 20 years now by engaging in those kinds of discussions.:x: Yes, dear.

I'm glad to know that, Brian. I think most of my tossing and turning comes from being uncomfortable. Geez, when we bought this bed, we thought we were getting the most comfortable bed on the planet. I'll never buy anything from Stearns and Foster again.

I'm fairly certain both beds have a trial period, and I think it's longer than 30 days for one if not both. Just don't remember the details.

I've also heard that you don't move nearly as much on the foam, but I don't recall noticing it the few times I slept on one. I would think that this would be a good thing. When you think about it, the Sleep Number is doing at least a little of the same thing - providing support and minimizing the tossing.

I'm gonna look that up, Brian. some things you just cant buy that are cheap that you use often, and I sleep in my bed nightly for 6 to 9 hours.
when I was younger I had cheaper beds wear out, hurt my back or go flat.
so I decided to spend some money on a good bed, I was shocked one could cost that much but it was an investment you need and use. :tup1:

you guys that hate waterbeds must not have tried one in the last few decades. i've slept on a hi-tech waterbed for over 15 years. today's are waveless, temp controlled, and variable hardness. i had bad back troubles for years and tried all reliefs until i got this waterbed. no problems ever again. and there's nothing more comfortable in the deep winter than a warm waterbed. i did try sleeping on a Tempurpedic and couldn't stand it myself. oh well, i guess that's why they make both chocolate and vanilla ice cream.

We have a Comfortaire. http://www.comfortaire.com/ It is pretty much a sleep number bed but is different from the brand you see on TV because there is no partition between the sides. I LOVE it, and it was totally worth every penny. My husband likes to sleep on a brick, and I like to sleep on a marshmallow, and this way we can actually share a bed :)

I'm happy to say; the wife and I are proud owners of a brand new Tempur-Pedic bed. It was a bit pricier than the conventional beds but considering how much time we spend on it and how long we hope to own it, it will be worth it. Can't wait to go to sleep tonight.:)

Casper has a bad back too and we were back and forth about buying the TempurPedic or the Sleep Number bed. On a regular mattress his back ached so much it would keep him awake at night. After staying over at a friend's house, he insisted that we buy the Tempurpedic. It worked OK for a few months and then his back started acting up real bad again.

End result was we bought the Sleep Number after having the other mattress for just a year.

The Sleep Number bed is awesome. I like a hard mattress, he prefers a soft one and before we got this bed, we could never compromise on a decent mattress. Now we are both happy and his back problems are no more.

Hope your bed works out for you. It certainly is a pretty penny to put down for a piece of furniture, but then again, you spend a decent amount of time on it too :D

We didn't like how the Sleep Number felt and I've heard too many negatives about them anyway. It came down to the Tempur-Pedic and a Simmons BeautyRest, that we really liked. I would have been happy with either but my wife has rheumatoid arthritis and spends much of her life in pain, so we decided to go with the bed that seemed to be better for her condition. It was sooooo comfortable. After a month or so, I'll report back.

I have to recant my earlier posts. I still love my sleep number, my girlfriend can't stand it. She says she always feels higher than me, which is weird cause I sleep at a much harder setting than her, but she also feels that we are sleeping seperate, I don't get it. I still love it, it is the only bed I can sleep on w/o back and neck pain in the a.m.

Alright, it's been over 2 months since we received our Tempur-pedic. I'm sending it back. Probably the worst mattress I've ever slept on. Feels like I am sleeping on a sidewalk (not like I know what that's like...:D). We thought we just had to get used to it, but that never happened. :bang:

We just ordered the Sealy Posturepedic Signature Series 11. Hopefully that will be worth the expense.

We've had one since November -- an off brand -- having troubles with one side and we need service -- wish we'd gone with the name brand for that.

BUT, my back problems are very improved. I like it soft and husband likes it much firmer.

Wiley and I have had our share of mattresses as well. We thought we liked a fairly firm mattress but weren't sleeping well. A friend suggested a memory topper. We have had a 4" Serta memory foam topper for a couple years. No issues about conforming to body shape in a timely manner. Comfort and durability are A+. The only negative is the foam can be a bit warm. We adjust our linens in the Summer here.

If interested...overstock.com runs some great specials.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I should throw this out there for those considering Tempur-Pedic. I have had one for about four years. I didn't like it initially, but after a few months, I grew to like it and my back pain went away. However, after about three years, I noticed that the bed no longer "molds" to fit you. Basically, it is now like a regular mattress, which will give you the pressure points that make you sore in the morning. I looked at the warranty information they will not cover the "normal increase in softness" as they put it, so I paid a lot of money for a bed that did what it said it would for only a couple years. I now regularly wake up with a sore back and sore hip. Consider yourself warned.

The best thing I did for me to get a good nites sleep was sleeping in my own bed, all by myself. The only company I allowed in my bed was Mikey, my devoted dog. Worked for me, and was sleeping at nite, peacefully.
Nothing like the warmth of a devoted pet. :D

My bride and I bought an off-brand tempurpedic mattress and were debating on what to replace it with. It was now sagging where we sleep. As luck would have it, I met a mattress manufacturer in Dallas at the airport. We started talking and I explained that the wife and I were in the market for new bedding. I asked what he thought was the best set and laughing he said they were all crap. So I asked what the best piece of crap was. He said the SERTA Suite Dreams by Marriott. He asked where I live, (Talladega, Alabama), gave me his card, wrote a name on it and told me to call this man, explain how we had met, and I would get a deal.
Well, I got the ball rolling and called. The gentleman is the GM of a mattress manufacturing plant in North Alabama. I told him what I wanted, and he said I could pick it up the following week. I arrived early and he asked if I wanted to watch it being made. Now this is where it gets interesting.
In the same building, using the same equipment, they produce the majority of all name brands, with the same materials, just a different brand tag on it. It was wild to see rolls of different name brand tags at the end of the process.
To sum up, we found that hotel mattresses are built to a higher standard than consumer grades, but this is a little known fact.
The same mattress that list for 3200.00 on Marriott web site was loaded on my trailer at the plant for 435.00. And yes, it feels like I am in a hotel every night now.

We got the sleep number bed a few months ago. We looked at the TP, but a couple of people told me that it tends to hold in your body heat, which I don't like.

It took a few months to get used to it, but I talked to my chiropractor about it and she gave me some good advice. She said if you sleep on your side, you want it pretty firm, and to set it a little above medium (which for me is about 65). If you sleep on your back, she said to set it a little below medium (around 40-45).

As for the price: we paid $2600 for ours (one of the better sets with a wireless remote). A lot of people would say that's way more than what they would like to spend, but you have to look at it over the long term. If the set lasts us 10 years (which it should easily) that comes out to 71 cents a day. If you're waking up tired, sore, and groggy, you would most likely pay the 71 cents to feel rested and free from back aches and pains.

When I bought mine, they offered 0% financing for 16 months, which made it much easier to pay out over the term as opposed to coming up with $2600 all at once. The only thing I didn't like was the short trial period (30 days). I kind of felt pressured to make a decision in a short time. Fortunately, it worked out well.

Interesting note about the Bama Factory however. Same thing exists in Oman where a factory pumps out all the hotel mattresses used in the area, irrespective of brand name.

I think people would be surprised if they knew how many different brand-name products are made at the same place.

In my younger days, I worked at a factory that made the plastic tool boxes for the back of pickups. I worked in the molding department, but the department where they actually assembled the pieces and packaged the boxes for shipping was in the same building.

They kept several different boxes of stickers on hand, and used the appropriate sticker depending on what company we were shipping to. They were all the same tool boxes, they just had different stickers and were sold at different stores,.......and most likely at different prices.

That's called private labeling. Lots of manufacturers do it.
