I don't usually bother with birthdays, but this one belongs to a dignitary in the tile trade, my friend Michael Byrne, author of the book, Setting Tile, and numerous tile articles. A lot of younger folks don't know that Michael is also one of the founders and the first executive director of the Ceramic Tile Education Foundation, aka "the tile school." :)
Michael is a member of John Bridge Forums, although he seldom posts. Our birthday robot sent him an automated message on his birthday, and he has responded:
"To John and friends,
Thanks for the birthday greeting!
Hope all is well in Texas.
Regards,
Michael

have to confess that my first "how to" tile book was Byrne's. Fortunately it wasn't Homer's. :o

I've owned a copy of Setting Tile for years. I'm also looking forward to his next book if he ever finishes it. ;)

Update. Michael says the new book will be done this year. He's working on captions for his illustrations right now. JLC is going to publish it, so keep an eye out. If experience means anything, I think the book will be issued late summer/early fall. I can be corrected on that, though. Maybe JLC is faster than other publishers.
This book is going to very comprehensive. It'll be well worth the price whatever it is. :)

Just a short thanks to everybody who took the time to send along a birthday greeting. John has a good bunch of people here, and I am lucky to count him and his group among my friends. My best regards to you all!
Michael

Mr. Byrne,
:birthday:
Cheers.
I don't do birthday threads, but I suppose I should make an exception and say I'll look forward to reading the new book, Michael. Have the old one at hand on accounta people do make reference to things in there and I gotta be able to look'em up, eh?
And it's got better pichers than JB's books. :D

I think I bought my first copy of Michael's book in 1987 or '88. Damn, there was so much I didn't understand then but wanted desperately to know. I'd been working with a mason who also did tile work for a few years by then and had set quite a bit already, but it was Michael's book that gave me the confidence to tackle my first solo shower remodel (the house I was renting).
Thank you Michael and happy birthday!

PS: Amazon's got both Michael's book and John's book paired up for a bundle sale if anyone needs to replace their's. :)

Shaugnn, Why did you redo a shower in a house you were renting? Just curious, Im in the process of doing some landscaping in a house im renting and it just seems like a waste of time/money.:stupid2:

Jeremy,
Because I looked at the shower and it didn't look "right" to me. Because I was/am constantly excited about tile and all of it's applications and I wanted to change my living environment to express that. Because I didn't know if I could do it or not and wanted to find out. There are a bunch of reasons that I did it and none of them were related to how much money or time it cost.
There were lots of anxious moments, but I did stand back and bask in it's finished glory. I know I'd be embarrassed if I were to see it now, but then it felt like I'd just built the Taj Mahal. Thanks again Birthday Boy! :aparty:

Happy Birthday Michael !!!!
Your book was also the first in my collection and I have read it many times. It stands, well loved, in my construction library, next to John's 2 books. It too helped me attempt something that seemed far beyond my abilities. :tup1:

i bought micheals walls and floors videos, hes skinny as a stick and has a mustache and a rat tail (awesome) and pulls mud for the floors and floats his walls. Pretty cool stuff for me because I am a fellow mudder.
