I would like to share my opinion that the smiley face creature bashing on the seemingly dead donkey that pops up as an optional icon on the immediate RT of the "post new thread" box might-should-be deleted. Violence outside of the Cayote/Road-Runner Show is not so humourous, and that really happened here in Seattle! The donkey was a Parks Dept pet and loved by many; beaten to death by a group of insane creepy juvenile delinquents. I might be over-sensitive, but I find it disturbing; aren't these smiley-face things supposed to be "cute"?

Welcome, Brandis. Please put a first name in a permanent signature line for us to use. If it's Brandis, enter that so folks will know. :)

The smiley you take issue with is meant to depict the beating of a dead horse. Already dead. That's the point. And here in our Mud Box, there is a great deal of dead horse beating going on on a regular basis, hence the appropriate smiley.

The beating is purely psycological.

I will bring up the subject on your behalf in our Board Room where site content decisions are made. We appreciate your interest in the matter, but no promises on removal of that smiley. I know it to be a great favorite amongst a lot of our members.

Hi brandis (a belated welcome to the forum),

Smileys can be cute, but are intended to be used as additional means of communication. As many people know, the written word online can be misunderstood. Smileys help keep that communication on target (well, most of the time :) ) and around here smileys are encouraged...to keep things light and convey the true intent of a post.

The dead horse smiley is truly metaphorical. As cx mentioned, some threads go on and on and on about something..that smiley lets folsk know it's time to move along.

And those juveniles that actually did that in your area should be horse whipped. And I'm guessing someone here will come up with a horse whip smiley. ;)

I think the smiley would be better if he wasn't beating that horse in, you know, his junk. Would it be so hard to flip the horse over or something?

As cx mentioned, some threads go on and on and on about something... you mean like threads that go on and on about dead horses or about whether it's really a dead horse or a dead mule or maybe the horse/mule isn't really dead yet or.......
:deadhorse:deadhorse:deadhorse

Either way works. Easy for you to say. :)

Brandis, I was interested in what you talked about and did some research. What happened to Pasado was truly cruel. But not what we're about here. :shake: Note folks, not a pleasant story.

Hi Brandis,
Here's an interesting bit of trivia for everyone to consider. There was a time when there were no laws restricting the mistreatment of children. It was actually a law protecting service animals (specifically pack animals) in New York City that provided the precedent to prosecute the first case of child abuse here in the United States.
A street peddler was beating his son in the streets of New York City so badly that bystanders fetched police to stop it, but the police knew of no laws the man was breaking and so had to stand by while the "parent disciplined his child". Finally, someone pointed out that the boy had been pulling the peddler's cart, and the police decided that the boy then qualified as a "pack animal" and the man was arrested.
Like it or not, it was the demand for humane treatment of animals which has ultimately led to the many laws we have today which protect our children from mistreatment and abuse.

It's obviously a dead horse because it's wearing a saddle, sillies.

It's obviously a dead horse because it's wearing a saddle, sillies. So, if you don't pewt a saddle onna horse, he won't die?

I didn't know that. :D

Yup, that's the way I learn't it, CX. That's why horses don't like wearing saddles in the first place. When they are little foals, their dames scare them with stories about "The Saddler".

I think a better idea is a minimum post count to be able to see "The Mud Box" forum. Perhaps 30 posts before one is allowed to view this area.

Scott,

I don't know what is the weirdest thing about that story: that this guy has been rogering dead animals "necrophelia and bestiality', or that the bail was set at only $200 for the latest incident   , or that he couldn't come up with $200 to bail himself out. :D

and it is already dead, (I will assume of natural causes), I can again sleep at night. Thanks for explaining the connection to the cliche..."beating a dead horse". So I withdraw my request to get rid of it, but it certainly could be clarified as per other suggestions mentioned in this thread. Hope the smiley I picked expresses confusion....
