My daughter is buying a new house with travertine floors. The travertine was evidently not installed properly and the lips are very uneven. I understand it is not advisable to sand travertine which the builder has tried with poor results. To make this floor a smooth surface is the only fix to have the floor honed? If so, what is involved in the honing and is this normally an expensive job?

It can be expensive and involves a machine like a buffer with diamond plates and a lot of water, they start with a coarse grit and work their way up to the finish you want.NSRAWEB may have someone in your area.
