We have a vinyl floor and would like to lay linoleum tiles over it. Is this possible, or do we have to remove the vinyl? If I can lay it over, do I have to prep te surface underneath with anything?

Yes, you can set vct over existing vinyl as long as you 1; assure that the existing is glued down 100%, 2; the vinyl is securely bonded, and 3; you fill the pattern in the vinyl (called embossing) with an embossing leveler.

Hi Karen, Welcome aboard. :)

I'm not experienced with vinyl, but from what Jay says, it sounds like it might be easier to remove the old vinyl and start with a clean floor.

Some old vinals are too soft to go over. Nowadays, this isn't a problem, but I see alot of 15-20 year old vinal floors with a very thick cusion layer. You can't go over them. If you can temporarily dent it with your finger, it's too soft. Most vinal tile manufacturers will tell you to use their wax remover / cleaner, their skiming material, and their glue. Putting a subfloor in for vinal ain't too hard. Alot of vinal guys won't ever go over existing.

I meant possible, but in review it also gives the appropriate idea of doing the embossing leveling.
