My knowledgeable tile store owner provided me with Tec AccuColor XT Next Generation grout, unsanded, TEC7035045311, for my bathroom including shower walls.

He advised me NOT to seal it, even for the shower walls, as it has some kind of molecular structure that won't allow water to penetrate. Sealing, he said, is not only unnecessary but problematic.

I just spoke to a tiler who said, if it was mixed with water (it was) it needs to be sealed - period.

The box says simply "No need to seal grout," but if you do seal it, "use a compatible solvent based sealer."

What's the scoop? To seal or not to seal? If so, what's an appropriate sealer?

Thanks!

Hickory

Hi Hickory :)

This is taken directly from the Product Data Sheet:

Notes: AccuColor XT grout never needs sealing, however, if the tile or
stone is to be sealed after grout is installed, use a compatible
solvent based sealer. Test a small area of the tile/stone and grout
to ensure you achieve the desired results. If a water-based sealer
is required, pre-seal the tile/stone. Do not apply sealer to
tile/stone edges as this may prevent proper grout bond.

I always suggest following manufacturers directions. ;)

Hickory, why do you think it needs to be sealed? What are you trying to accomplish?

John, what is your opinion of sealing showers? Does the grout act as part of the drainage and drying process for the shower pan? There are so many opinions of sealing showers. As you know on the other board we frequent, it comes up all the time.

Hi Steve :)

Great topic!

How about starting a new thread, and I be sure to give my point of view. ;)

Ok John. Guess we need to get out of the HOs thread, but thought it was relevant.

Hi Steve :)

I don't see it as being relevant in Hickory's case due to the manufacturer's recommendations of the grout she used. While I don't always follow manufacturer's recommendations, I like to give advice to our DIY's using their products specifically used. I also frequently speak to Tech Support from numerous manufacturer's, and can get permission to do things that usually aren't on the label.
