View Full Version : Does vinegar dilute grout that is curing?

Hi -I am in the first day of the three day grout curing stage - I had lots of grout haze on my tile and used TileLab haze remover - which didn't work - so, I used vinegar - full strength and, so far, the tiles look really good. My question is - will the vinegar impair the grout I just laid? I tried not to let the vinegar seep into the grout but I really wanted to remove as much of the haze as possible. Thanks -

Well it does tend to hamper the curing of the grout,if it is chalky after it cures that's bad,but hopefully it'll be okay.A rinsing with a little ammonia in a bucket of water may help, but the lime in the grout tends to even out with the acid to neutralize it if it's in small amounts.

Hi Cayce, Welcome! :)
For the benefit of readers of your post, I must reiterate the importance of removing as much grout haze during the initial grouting process. Many times it is the concentration of acrylic latex that dries quickly and forms a film.
The use of a micro fiber cloth greatly aids in the removal of this film (clefted porous slate is another issue) during secondary and final wash if needed.
If the consumer chooses to use an acidic product prior to grout curing, I strongly suggest prewetting the grout joints to have minimal effect (of the acid) on the grout itself (followed by a neutralizing rinse as Dave suggested).
