View Full Version : seeing red
I often use the "Omnichrom" red pencils that Braxton-Bragg sells to mark tile when it is wet. The mark has always been water-soluble, just washes off with a wipe of the sponge. On a recently completed job I have a couple of small marks on some ceramic tile that don't want to come off now. My customer tried nail polish remover ( acetone) and detergent, but they are still there.Any ideas? It may be that the grout sealer, Miracle 511 Impegnator, covered over the mark ( I haven't seen the marks yet) but that has never posed a problem before with wiping off the marks. Any thought would be appreciated! JoeC

Joe I moved you over to the Cleaning and Restoration end.. :)
What kind of tile is it? Glazed unglazed? And it's ceramic and not porcelain?

If it's a ceramic or porcelain ihave used Barkeepers friend, but rinse it off and reseal, if needed.if it's stone you may wind up sanding it down and rehoning or polishing.

Go to the grocery store and get Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser
Thanks for the tips, Trask,Dave and Steve. It is a shiny glazed ceramic. I am bringing about 10 cleaners or solvents with me, but will definitely add these to the group, and test on some scrap tile first. Thanks again Joe

I've used it to remove metal marks out of unglazed 2x2 porcelain. Anyone else ever drag a snap cutter across a floor

Here is a trick I learned from my mom many years ago.
She always used windex and some old panty hose stockings to get what ever was on the floor off it. I still use it to this day - I put my own spin on it though and put a new tennis ball in the end of the stocking then spray the stocking and I can scrub it harder to get my marks of the tiles with no scratching.

Do you know the kind of crap I would take if I showed up at a jobsite...panty hose in hand

Hi Trask :)
Painters used to do it all the time, you'll be just fine! :lol1:
I'm a big fan of Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser. Reminds me, I have to go by another case. Great for removing pencil marks from stone (before sealing).
I've seen the tennis ball on a stick for removing shoe scuff marks from commercial floors. Never thought that a male or female tennis ball would make a difference. :D: Great idea! :tup2:

All you have to do is get some grout (the same color ofcourse)mix up some in a throwaway cup and use that to scrub it off.Just mix a little elbow grease in w/it.(old sponge or somethin)Just try it I can almost guarantee you it will work.Think of it as liquid sandpaper. :)
I went last week and tried the following
M.E. K solvent
Goof Off
Baking Soda paste
Various Bathroom scrubbing cleaners.
Put wet sealer on and rubbed like crazy.
I am still trying to find Barkeepers friend and the Miracle sealant rep suggested their Tile and Porcelain cleaner. I have a Mr. Clean eraser to try also. Any other ideas would be welcome. Joe

Tile Tike hit the nail right on the head. Mix up some grout, same color of course and scrub the marks with your finger. You usually have to use some elbow grease. IT WORKS!
