I have hair line cracks in my shower grout, I've started scrapping to remove & replace the grout but I'm finding the cracks do not go all the way through. I have removed a bit of grout in one area,if I stop now can I repair what I have removed or do I contine to remove the whole line? I'm hoping a cleaning & a sealant may work for the hair line crack, need some suggestions, thanks.

Tell us more about the shower, was mastic used? What kind of cement board is under tile?Is this unsanded grout? What kind of tile? Usually cracks mean movement unless there was a problem with the grout setting up.

Hi Amateur Renovator, Welcome! :)

Please share a first name with us, we're a friendly bunch! ;)

Without us seeing your project, it is difficult to properly diagnose. As Dave requested, some in depth investigation to the construction of the shower will help (as well as photo's - after your fourth post).

A typical regrout requires approx. 1/2 the depth of the tile or 2x the width of the grout joint.

Is there any mildew present in your existing grout?

Define sealant. Impregnating sealers will not solve your problems with the hairline cracks, although once corrected, the sealers will help grout maintenance and slow down potential damage depending on the substrate (beneath the tile). A silicone caulk will seal the joint after the grout is removed, but won't guarantee solving the initial problem.
