The Traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial arrived in Clemson yesterday. It was escorted by a reported 700 motorcycles, members of the Rolling Thunder and Patriot Guards. It was a very awesome, emotional experience watching it come into town. We plan to view it this weekend.
The Memorial will be on display on Clemson University's Bowman Field for Homecoming weekend. This was where the military cadets would drill when Clemson was a military school. On homecoming weekend it is filled with floats. For several years, Clemson students have constructed a Habitat for Humanity house on the field. The house will be moved to a permanent site after Homecoming. Here is a link (http://www.clemson.edu/webcams/webcam.php?type=stream&no=2) to a webcam overlooking Bowman Field. The pictures show the Memorial coming into town, some of the escort, and the honor guard that waited while the display was backed onto Bowman Field.

I thought I would post a couple more pictures along this same line. Here are two pictures reflecting Clemson University's military heritage. The first statue is on Military Heritage Plaza. It shows a young officer leaving Clemson College. On either side behind him are two brick pillars with half-molds of the statue signifying how the College transformed boys to men. I accidentally got a current student in the background, which added to the symbolism.
The second statue was given by the Class of 1944 in honor of their classmates who served and died in WWII. It is a very touching statue showing a young carefree college student on the left as he joined the military and a war-weary veteran as he left WWII. I wish the expression on the soldiers face had shown up better. The inscription is very moving.

Lots of activity on Bowman Field this week. The little bit of rain we are getting makes it even more interesting. :uhh:
The Memorial is parked behind and to the right of the Habitat for Humanity house at the far end of the field.

Let us know what time you will be going down there and maybe you could stand on the corner and look up at the President's window and wave to eveyone. :)

Yup, it's moving on tomorrow morning. We visited it after church today. I found my cousin's name and a high school classmate's name. I shed a few tears a few years ago when I visited the real one in D.C. and again today. But for the grace of God and the luck of the draw I could have been on the wall. Pretty sobering thought. There were a number of guys my age who were going through the same feelings I was today. What a contrast to today when people cheer the service men and women when they come through the airport.
