We just had a new marble mosaic bathroom grouted and we are devastated. It's not that the color doesn't match the sample we did (we grouted up 12"x24" samples before doing the whole floor ) - it's that we chose the wrong color to start with. The marble is a sea green 5/8" polished marble mosaic - on a bathroom floor, tub surround and shower floor/walls.

When the tile was installed, before it was grouted, we loved it. A sea of green. While the grout we chose looked okay on the sample board, when installed in the larger area it was clear that it had too much contrast, brought out the lighter colors in the mosaic and it lost the look we wanted. We used a Mapei Keracolor U grout.

We are considering using a colorant to change the look. Mapei referred us to NuGrout who Mapei said makes the colors for their grouts. I searched this forum for NuGrout and nothing came up which I thought was strange. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Also, in what I've read on this forum and on Dirty Grout website, some people question using a colorant in a shower. Should we be concerned about that? We also want to make sure we can seal over the colorant in the future when we are resealing the marble. Does that work with the epoxy colorants? Other things to consider?

We spent what is a small fortune for us on this tile and really want it to end up working out right. Is raking out the grout and regrouting an option at all on 5/8" mosaics over a large area?

Any help at all is much appreciated.

Thanks, Martin

Martin usually we recommend against color sealing shower floors, most aren't built with a preslope and stay wet which will eventually break the bond on the colorant, although i've seen some last for many years.Frankly i wouldn't want to attempt cutting out the grout on a 5/8" mosaic, but i'm not saying it can't be done. Also, you won't put sealers over grout colorant.

Dave,
Thanks. We do have a good preslope on the shower floor - 1/4" per foot or more. Does that make it more doable? Also, if I can't put sealant over the grout colorant, does that mean if I want to reseal the marble in a few years that I need to try to seal the 5/8" tiles without getting sealant on the grout?

Also, have you ever heard of NuGrout?

Thanks again for the advice.
