Hi friends,
Travelling for work (again) in the UK. I'm in Worcester in a Pub called "Ye Olde Talbot", thumb typin on my blackberry. They just rang last orders so I'll be headed back to my hotel room soon. I'm having fun trying to figure out what language the chaps at the next table are babbling in. :)

Hey Dave!

My daughter will be flying out of Detroit next week, bound for Great Britain, Ireland, Wales, and Scotland. It will be her first time abroad.

Yeah, she's going as a People to People (http://www.studentambassadors.org/) ambassador.

is that like the older days "student exchange program" ?Similar goals, I suppose. But this program is only for 3 weeks, and occurs during the summer.

As I understand it, People to People has its origins as a government program started by Eisenhower. It has since gone private (or I couldn't be a party to it  ).

My daughter will go as part of a group. They will stick together, mostly, but there will be some minor stays with "host" families.

The program is supposed to encourage an understanding among different cultures. At the meetings, I would occasionally get the impression that it was mainly an excuse for some professional chaperons to see parts of the world on the cheap.

In any case, I think it will be an excellent opportunity for my daughter to gain some life experience and learn some things about herself - lessons that come from being totally removed from one's normal environment and support system.

Incidentally, part of the instructions they received had to do with deflecting questions about US foreign policy.

Sorry to jack your thread, Dave. Carry on, mate!

Ahhh England. Have lots of friends there. The food is much better than it's reputation but still not as good as other European countries.

What does Dave do for a living? He's supposed to be keeping things running around here and administrating the forums. His other job is just for paying the bills. ;)
