Hi. This is my first post. I moved into a new house several months ago with a natural stone shower. First, until I started reading up on this an hour ago, I had no idea there was anything special about maintaining stone tile. I've cleaned it maybe four times with standard cleanser. Second, when I went to clean the shower about an hour and a half ago, in several sections, pieces of stone began to crumble or flake off. I have no idea the circumstances behind its installation. I'm pretty sure it's a fairly new tile job - it looks it (aside from the crumbling, that is). What does this mean? Was it never sealed? Is it cheap stone? Was it not installed properly? Have a messed it up somehow? And, most of all, what do I do now?

Also, I've no idea what kind of stone it is. It's sort of a very very pale salmonish color with a kind of rusty undertone here and there. It's pretty.

Any advice or information would be quite appreciated. I'm kind of in a panic.

Amy, after a couple posts you will be able to post pics, i think we'd have to see what you're talking about, but some cleaners have a very bad effect on stones, especially acidic,or high alkaline, depending on the stone, can actually break them down.

It sounds like you have some kind of marble, but pictures definitely would help. There could be more at play than just a problem stone or incorrect cleaner, so pictures definitely would help a lot - both close ups and shots of the entire shower.

Post some in the mudbox if you want to increase your post count to be able to post pictures. We don't talk about tile all that much there :neesie:
