My wife has found a beautiful slate that she would like to put down on our patio. The dimensions of the slate are 24" x 24" and approx 1/2" thick.

We have a paver patio now (24" x 24" x 2") precast concerete sitting on a compacted base. Rather than pouring a patio --- I was pondering the idea of thinsetting the slate to the pavers and then resetting the pavers.

I realize that I could rip out the existing patio pavers, pour myself a new slab and then set the slate tile on top.....but I was wondering if this "custom paver" --- concrete base with a slate top --- would make any sense.

Thanks in advance for any advice or thoughts.

if your planning on grouting the slate your idea wont work, too much movement will ruin the job. I would say you need a slab with control joints placed accordingly.

plus sometimes slate isnt recommended for outdoor freeze thaw climates, check with the supplier to see if the slate is for outdoor use.

Yeah, groutin wouldn't work, but i don't see any reason you can't thinset them onto the pavers,i wouldn't lift the pavers though, too hard to get everything back down right.
