How to clean stained marble?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get stains out of Marble? Thank you.

What kind of marble? (if you don't know the name, a description of the color should help - also if it is polished, honed or tumbled)
Where is the marble? (floor, wall, table)
What kind of stain? (or if you are unsure what caused the stain, at least try to describe what it looks like)
