She's a local girl (Mesa) and David Hernandez is from Glendale, just like Jordin Sparks. Hernandez was a finalist here on Arizona Idol.

We only started watching a couple years ago. It's gotten better. May have to start voting now with Mr. Cutie. :)

My enjoyment of American Idol stands in stark contrast to my perceived self-image, but I've made peace with it. I rarely miss an episode.

I've been rooting for Brooke White from the moment I saw her first audition.

I'm continually amazed by the massive epidemic of people who are afflicted with the delusion of their own singing talent. I attribute it to over a generation now of the promotion of a false sense of self-esteem by our educational system. Simon Cowell appears to be our best hope for a cure.

I agree, John - that ink was a big mistake. She sure can belt out a tune though. A few episodes back, she bravely tackled a Heart song that the Wilson sisters of Heart probably can't sing anymore.

I'll admit it. Frances got me hooked on it this year too. I thought just about everyone, but Marge's "Mr. Cutie" was a little off last night. I think they need to switch to a different set of music for next week. Tonight is going to be interesting.

Hi! This is Frances. I am thrilled to have Clyde hooked also. The last series was my first and I became hooked immediately.

My first choice was Michael Johns but he has not done well the last few times. I really like Mr. Cutie but also like Carly and Brooke. I do not like the immature oriental (sorry...can't remember her name). I think it will be her or the country singer from Oregon (musical wallpaper) leaving the show tonight.

Clyde wants to know if you saw Carly's husband's tatoos? I told him maybe he was a burn victim who uses the tatoos on his face to hide the scars. :)

Apologies to all my inked forum friends, but I think Carly and her mate have made some poor body-modification choices.

This article pretty much sums up my sentiment. http://www.csmonitor.com/2008/0314/p09s03-coop.html

The only time I've been able to get my mind off her horrible tattoo was somewhere in the middle of her fantastic version of Heart's Crazy on You a few weeks back.

Richie...they sure do resemble one another.

I remember, vaguely (or most likely incorrectly), that Carly and hubby have a tat business or something?

I agree about Simon. When I first started watching, I thought he was a real ***, but after watching a few shows I realized he is right on target nearly all the time, especially if you ignore the performer and really listen to the performance.

Of course, when all three say it was not a good performance, it was really bad.

John Bridge
03-20-2008, 02:45 PM

David Cook really shined in his performance last night. Not that it matters, but I think the judges may have given him a little too much credit for his bold arrangement though. Ryan pointed out that it was based on a Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave) version, but I think they missed that (or didn't understand it).

I'm glad you translated that, Colin. I didn't get it until the last two words. :)

I think watching the trials around the country is the most entertaining. There are some god-awful people who sincerely believe they have great talent. And then, of course, there are a lot of good people who never make it to the trials. It's not really fair, I suppose. ;)

I myself would be on American Idol if it weren't for the age limitation.

We both think Brooke has lost her spirit. David C. didn't hit it either. We weren't impressed with Jason, but the judges loved it. Personal preference, I guess.

Is Carly adding to her tattoos? I never noticed the small ones on the inside of her wrists before and I swear she is adding color to the big one on her arm. Not my preference in art. But on the other hand, I'm an :gerg:

Can we PLEEEEEZ vote off Paula?

The best part of the season is searching for that one episode where she manages one critique that's vaguely coherent - and in a complete sentence.

The most telling thing abt the show is how the contestants HANG on Simon's every word. You can practically hear their minds wandering as Paula speaks - er emotes.

And Randy. Come on! As a judge, don't you think HE of anyone has a responsibility to see beyond the original artist when Syesha sings? She ain't no Whitney or Fantasia, but that girl can BLOW!

I also think Cutie (heretofore Manchild) will go all the way.

My favorite, though is Carly. If it really were a singing contest, she shld win.

I think Syesha is boring (sorry JB). I think Carly has a great voice, but it didn't show this week, and I'm still struggling to get past the ink. It's not that she has a tattoo; it's that it's so intrusive. The only time it's not is when she's standing next to her husband.:shake: I see grandmas with tattoos when I'm out for groceries. How cool can it still be, kids?

I don't like dreadlocks, and the tattoo is way overboard. It's not only about voice and singing ability. It's about "idol." I think the person has to be good looking. I know I'm old fashioned, though. :)

I think Syesha needs to find a little more of herself. She has a great presence/smile, an outstanding vocal range, but would do well to choose her songs outside the Whitney genre. She's been in the bottom three too many times not to rethink her song selection.

I feel bad for Christy Lee. I find her to be the most improved. Certainly the best looking.

I bet the execs at BMG cringe every time they hear Simon rail against her. I mean, she could really be marketed well. She's got that Faith Hill thing going on.

Unlike Randy, I don't think it's about 'singing' alone. The whole look and marketability go into making a true 'idol'. That's why (IMHO) Ruben Studdard and Taylor Hicks floundered.

Someone can REALLY do something with CL. Mark my words, she's gonna be the Daughtry or Jennifer Hudson of this season.

I love Archuletta, but that whole GrobanBubleeAiken thing is played out. I mean, how many "It's a Very Michael Bolton Christmas" albums does the world need?

And I gotta give props to Brooke White. Sure, she's a gawky, Puritan Bigbird, but when that girl sings, she really FEELS her songs; that's rare. Very Fantasiaesque. I hope she does well. If I have to hear about her former job as a nanny any more, though, I'm gonna puke. I bet the parents of those kids are mad she left them without a sitter! Hey, I hear Josiah Lemons needs a job.

Now it's getting very tough! So many things come into play: talent; appearance; personality; luck; special group appeal . . . Each one of them has certain qualities.

Who goes tonight???????

I think at this point, even if they go, they will probably get some type of opportunity.

ddmoit
04-16-2008, 12:27 PM

Darn! Paula wasn't voted off.

Is there anything more awkward than seeing David Cook do those ridiculous Ford commercials? I mean, Syesha, Carly, and Kristy are smiley and bubbly enough to pull it off. David A and Brook look they stepped right out of Disney anyway, so they fit into it. Predator Travolta looks stoned all the time so he doesn't care if he's pushing a crappy Ford Escort or a doobie.

But that David Cook! I swear I can hear him thinking each week, "My friends are NEVER gonna let me live this down."

For heaven's sake, he should get voted off so he can start his real career. Any longer and he's gonna be a permanent joke.

I hear next week is Celine Dion week and DC's gonna do a Curt Cobain version of the Titanic song. (Michael Johns was secretly happy to be voted off last week after discovering that he was slated to sing a medley of the entire Glitter soundtrack for Pariah Scary week).

A very interesting night.

ok--out of whos left..who would you pay to sit and hear for a 1 1/2 show..
I like David A and Brooke, but I would get tired by about the 3rd song..For me at this point ,its David Cook...

Depending on the songs over the next few weeks....the David's should make the top three. After tonight, I think Jason or maybe Brooke will be saying adios. Was great to see Syesha really enjoy her performance...did well.

Best performance of the night - Syesha. She was in her element.

Worst performance of the night - Jason. He was totally lost.

The rest were fairly good, but not outstanding.

I have to feel sorry for Brooke. She is so uptight I'm afraid she will melt down. I was glad to see her start over. She did fairly well on the restart.

That's my opinion and I'm stickin' to it!

Syesha looked spectacular. She has never looked bad, but she was really something last night. That said, I didn't enjoy her performance as much as did the judges.

Brooke - I don't think there's anything she could do to make me not like her. I think she'll be safe this week out of sympathy.

I didn't see much of the rest of the show. I found an SNL special featuring Chris Farley to be more entertaining. I'm just not a show tunes person most of the time.

I ain't a broadway guy either, but that Andrew Lloyd Weber can sure write a song.

I thought DCook's song was fantastic. He showed versatility and good range and yet STILL managed to make a very sappy song (no disrespect intended; I LOVE that song) 'his own'. He's genuine and has a distinct style.

I hope he goes far in his career.

I thought Mr. Webber's advice (what I saw of it) was more useful than the advice of other guest stars. The man has a passion.

Marge
04-23-2008, 09:20 AM
Lord Webber's contribution most definitely held some solid advice for the contestants!

And I agree, David C did an outstanding job on one of my favorite songs. We saw Phantom in London so it's a special memory that one.

My wife is in an office pool for Idol and has Jason Castro. If he makes it to 4th, she at least wins back her entry fee, but after last night she expects that won't happen.

Syesha had her best performance yet. Although I hate Carly's tattoos, I think she did good last night.

My favorite since it started has been David Cook, but last night I liked Syesha the best.

David Cook had and indie album that hit #1 on Amazon for downloads on Saturday. You can't access it anymore as they pulled it. I did find a link where you can stream each song or download and purchase. I sure hope they learned with the Bo Bice disaster of a record that you can't take someone and change what they do and make it come off good.

Saw Bo perform with Lynyrd Skynyrd in Atlantic City when the VH1 Special was taped. Was an awesome show.

Here's the David Cook Album (http://davidcookrocks.fuzz.com/album/Analog-Heart-David-Cook)

The judges seemed to have it out for Carly and Syesha from the get go. Those two chicks can SING but they always land up on the South side of the Restarters and the dreadsters.

Likeabilty counts for a lot. But it was sad to see Carly go.

Man, I forgot how great Phantom of the Opera is. It's genius like the BeeGees are genius. Brilliant. Cheesy. But brilliant. Hat tipped to the Brits.

With Neil Diamond coming on as coach this week, Syesha should be able to find another hit. I still firmly believe she represents the only "idol" material they have available.

Too bad we can't vote Paula Abdul off the show. She starts to say how bad Jason's 2nd song was, until they point out he had only sung one song so far. Then she tries to say she was accidently looking at her notes on David Cook.

So when Simon asks her who her favorite was in that round, she says "Cook", the one she apparrently thought did so bad.

I hope they replace her next year with someone who will actually critique the performances.

David from Utah almost made me faint, and I've been watching Idol a long time and no one on that show has ever, shall we say, moved me the way he did tonight. That kid can sing. He is soooooooo :) cute also. I hope he takes it all. I also hope his father stays out of his business and he gets a great manager. piggy

The thing I love about Archuletta is that when he starts to sing a love song, I'm all "aw how cute and mildly disturbing to see a little kid sing about adult-stuff". But by the time he ends, I forget he's only 16.

That kid seems to feel his songs, and sing with a special and genuine maturity. He's gifted in ways other prodigy singers are not.

My prediction for order of elim:

1. Travolta,
2. Whitney,
3. Information Society

Archie's gonna win. He should marry Dianna Digarmo (season 3 finalist). They could move to Oz, run the Munchkinland-Vegas circuit, and have little Munchkin babies.

Oh the scandal!

I just heard on the news that Cutie's dad has had his backstage pass revoked. Something about changing the lyrics to "Stand By Me" to include lyrics from another song. And Idol has to pay the royalties. You gotta wonder if he was getting annoying beforehand and this was the final straw.

12 hours left to place your bets.

I thought everyone had good and not-so-good performances last night. And it sure seems like the judges are playing favorites. Anyone else catch Paula's comment about Syesha being in "third place"?

I'm guessing it will be down to the predicted two David's, but.......

Latest conspiracy theory is that David Cook sang less popular songs because he wants to come in second and not be saddled by the mandatory contract that the winner gets.

David A. sang very good, but all of his songs sound the same to me.

I can't wait to tune into the last 10 minutes of tonight's show!

The only bad part of the final last nite was watching "little" David jump around in that boxing outfit. How outaplace did HE look? He woulda been more at home jumping out of a jackinthebox or something. Cook look like he really wanted to smack down, until Seacrest forced him to give the obligatory, "Little David, you're one of the nicest guys here." YUCK!

That aside, it WAS a great final. Either guy deserves to win.
It's a far cry from Blake Lewis, Bo Bice, Dianna Digarmo and Justin Guantanamo.

There's lots of room for more Daughtry's and that's exactly what David Cook can be. I don't believe he brought his A game last night. I've always felt he's a sincere performer but a little out of his element in American-Disney-Idol. That being said, he had an incredible way of making the Mariah Carey songs of the world "his own". For that he gets ultimate kudos.

I think it's very bad for the American Idol brand that they can't push guys like Big David and Daughtry through the machine and keep them. If all they can get is Turkey Ruben, Kelly (lukewarm bubblegum Alanis Morissette wannabe), and Taylor (needs no funny nickname) Hicks, then what do they got? A big fat pile of jack squat, that's what.

Can't wait for So You Think You can Dance. Now THAT'S some serious talent!
