Hi all,

Newbie here, but have been lurking for a the last few weeks.

I am about to install a slate backsplash in our kitchen, and would like to confirm that I understand the sealing/grouting process.

My wife has chosen an African 1x3 subway-tile style slate, plus insert throughout. We would like to enhance the colour, but not make it look shiny/glossy.

Is this the correct order to do this ?

1. Install backsplash - use thinset, not mastic. Thinset should be applied using a 1/4" notched trowel.

2. Use Stonetech enhancer (or Pro) to bring out the colour of the tile. Apply it in small areas, wipe it down before it dries for a uniform look.

3. Re-do #2 above if I want the colour to be more enhanced. Allow 72 hours to cure before moving on to next step.

4. Grout the tile, small areas, cleaning as I go. Question - does the ST Enhancer also work as a grout release ?

5. This is where I am lost. I want to seal this tile, to prevent grease/water stains. Do I use the ST enhancer again, or do I use ST Semi-Gloss Sealer ?

Any help or confirmation on the above would be greatly appreciated.

You're correct, but the enhancer is a sealer and you won't need another. It will act as a grout release to some degree but you still have to meticulously clean slate.

Thanks.

So, is there something else that I should do before grouting to avoid having a mess to cleanup after grouting ?

No. :D I like to cut a sponge in half so i have corners on it to get into crevaces.
