We have been using our Kerdi Travertine shower for about a year now. I used the Spectralock Pro grout cause I thought it was more mildew resistant. I also sealed the tile with the Stonetech sealer. My wife would not squegee or wipe the shower down (She was always the last one to shower) I have been trying to clean it with Simple Green stone cleaner. We have been getting this mildew no on the grout joints. Any ideas why? or what to clean it with? Thanks

Hi Ray -
Mildew grows when it has everything it needs to survive. A place to live and something to eat is all any of us really need and mildew is no exception.....
Damp or moist surfaces are a perfect home and traces of organics to eat are all mildew needs to take hold and start growing. The organics are soap residues, conditioners, oils, and bits of anything else you use in the shower.
Make sure the shower walls get to dry out regularly and give it a good scrub with a soft bristle brush and a neutral cleaner once in awhile. Make sure when you scrub it down you use enough liquid so stuff that gets loosened up can float down the walls. Rinse with a lot of water too.
A couple of tablespoons of bleach mixed in a quart of water will kill the mildew and stop it growing. Wet the affected areas with the mix and scrub it a little and add a little more bleach mix. Rinse well after 10 minutes or so. Don't use the bleach mix too often if you have sealed the stone. The bleach will degrade the sealer a little every time you use it.
There are also mildicide products on the market if you need to go there but the bleach/water trick usually works and the stone doesn't react to it...
