View Full Version : Too Late? Sealing after shower use...

We moved in about 7 months ago. We have a large custom shower with ceramic tile with sanded grout. I asked about sealing the grout when we moved in, and the tile guy said something about an additive they put in the grout that not necessarily needed sealing...reading this forum makes me second guess that decision.

The grout still looks great - the walls get very little water. The floor obviously is a different story.

So should I seal it? Let it dry for a few days, apply sealer, etc?

Thanks,
Kris

Sealers are a good idea, but they are not miracle products. Most sealers a today are water-based and, as such, are penetrating sealers. That is, they go IN the joint rather than ON the joint. They are resistant to external invasion of moisture, but still allow the system to "breathe".

The "additive" that your tile setter refers to is either latex, acrylic, or polymer modifiers that make the joint denser / less porous, but they are not a substitute for sealers.

Sorry......Aska Southerner a simple question, and you get the plot for a short novel. :D

Yes. Let it dry for 48 hours, then apply 2 coats. About 45 minutes between coats.
