Two years ago yesterday, I suffered injuries that changed my life. But from it, I received the greatests gift I could have got. I was the recipient of donated bone from 2 different people which in turn, enabled me to have a second chance. Had it not been for their generosity, I would not walk across the soccer and baseball fields to watch my children play. I would not have been able to pick up my smallest ones or do more fine skills like 2 days ago when I gripped an outside corner of a rondect ct and cut it into an end return to butt up to a stove or guide my grinder along a piece of Hardi the week before to make cut outs for 2 niches. It took near 2 years to have the ability to walk into someones house to do my craft. It would never have happened if it were not for people who decided to become organ and tissue donors.
There are countless others who will be worse off. I would have only ended up crippled. How many will lose their life waiting for a heart, a lung, a liver or a kidney? How many will never see the faces of their families?
We are recyclable. We keep plastic, glass and cardboard out of the ground, so why waste ourselves? The perfect gift this year would be to chose to become a donor. It must be made very clear to your families that these are your wishes. As the family gathers around the table for Christmas dinner, let them know. It might even inspire one of them to do the same.
Until such time, there's always a demand for blood and blood products. My MIL recently had 2 pints transfused during knee replacement. How many of us will be recipients of that gift in our lives?
