I live in an old Victorian home (1864). The bathrooms were put in in the 20s. On the floor are 1/4" thick very hard white ceramic unglazed hex tiles. They were set individually in a 1" thick mortar bed with about 1/6" space between each tile. Over the years they have become stained. They are actually patchy as some tiles are more stained than others. I have tried every cleaner known to man (including some that were probably not good for my health) to no avail. I finally decided to use ceramic and marble polishing pads on a random orbit tool and ground the grime (and a bit of the tile) off. I started with 50 grit and worked my way to 3000 grit. It worked very well, I've got a nice white smooth floor now. But, I'm trying to decide if I should apply some kind of sealer to keep it that way. Can anyone offer some professional advice? Also, what's the best cleaner to use on a floor like this.

Can you give us a name? Usually a honing powder and hogs hair pad is all you need to polish up tile.If your tile is still white, any neutral cleaner will work, until it starts getting real dirty, then a mildewcide, and alkaline cleaner should work,mb-3,or any commercial soap scum remover. If the grout is really bad a steam cleaner and or acid cleaner should work...there are a million brands. If the tile soaks in water(turns darker) use an impregnating/penetrating sealer, but i don't think it will, just use it on the grout.
