Hello To all,
I have a outside deck overtop of my living room,.Originally it was a material called deckTec It was hired out and was expensive and looked like crap. I then decided to go over it with 12" slate tiles. I did not use grout thinking that mortar would be more durable and moisture resistant than grout. I did preseal my tile. I did still have a problem with the mortar getting on surface of the slate and also after one season the mortar discolored from the high iron content in some tiles leaving rust stains. I used muratic acid to clean it off. That worked pretty well. I flushed it with clear water but I did not neutralize it. I see that there are small holes and hairline cracks in the grout lines wich are mortar. I know that the acid was a bit hard on yhe mortar and I need to repair the lines to seal out any water. I have carefully removed 1/8 to 1/4 of the mortar from the problem areas careful not to pierce my membrane. Should I use Mortar or epoxy mortar or grout to refill the areas in need of repair??? The grout lines vary from 1/8 to 3/8 more or less in width and also the same in depth due to the irregularity of the slate tiles. I want to thank in advance anyone who has the expertise and kindness to be helpful with this technical question
Thanx
