Scott,
I've never actually purchased anything from these guys, but I do occasionally get emails from them with some pretty good deals:

Check these guys out. Ten seats on each flight for ten bucks.
Their regular prices are pretty cheap too, but they only fly into and out of Columbus, Ohio.

To search for deals, I'll start with www.kayak.com - they will check a whole bunch of different sites and tell you the costs. But you can usually do better by then going to the specific airlines' website to book.
Also, most of the major airlines have an email you can subscribe to and see what their last minute deals are - usually it's for a long weekend trip. United, for example tells you what they are for the coming weekend and the weekend after that. I think it's Friday/Saturday departures and Monday/Tuesday returns.
Travelocity also has a "Fare Watcher" feature. You choose your destination and can set up when they should tell you about it - for example, if the fare falls by more than $100 or if it costs less than $X. I use that to catch deals to visit the folks.

Scott,
Give SideStep (http://www.sidestep.com) a try.
Cheers.

If you're willing to fly Southwest, download their DING! app from their website. Plug in your cities that you'd be interested in going to. It will notify you of deals based on the cities you enter.
The deals are usually good, but most of them have to be purchased within a couple of hours.
I've gotten some great deals to Las Vegas as well as California.

Try one of the last minute travel places. Just ggogle for it. They sell off airrfares, package tours and hotels. Ususally the best deals are 1 to 2 weeks before departure. It helps to have flexabilty in your travel time and destination if you use this route.
It was one of these places that my wife and I used to get a great deal ( much less than half of the regular price) on a all inclusive vacation to Cuba last year and the year before.
