Help! When I moved into my home, the previous home owner instructed me to re-seal the slate shower every six months or so. I am not sure what type of sealant (if any) he originally used on the shower. Do I need to strip the shower before applying a new coat of sealant? Or can I just slap on a new coat?

Also, I live in AZ and the water here is very hard. It has left a slight white residue on the stone. And the shower is starting to smell a little.

Thank you very much in advance for your advice.

You shouldn't need to seal it every 6 months. It's hard to say about sealers over sealers,it would be nice if you knew what they used, you may have to clean and strip it,but i wonder what the smell is, mildew,or too much sealer?Typically if you overseal as they did it tends to leave a milky white residue, but so can hard water.I would try an alkaline stone cleaner and stiff brush, clean and rinse well. Then see what it looks like.
