Hi -- I'm confused. My brother-in-law visited us yesterday in our new house (we've been here a month) and said we shouldn't even be taking showers in our shower until we've sealed it. Ditto for the counters and floors.

We have marble countertops in two baths, marble trim in two porcelain-tile showers, and marble trim on the bath floors. Also a marble fireplace and entry. We have Italian porcelain tile on the kitchen floor and bath floors, with small marble squares in the baths. Nothing is sealed. (Our tile guy left us in the lurch after we had paid him in advance for everything.) So I guess this is an emergency, and we need to seal everything this weekend. What should we use? I can't order anything by internet because it won't get here soon enough. Do we use the same thing for the grout that we do for the porcelain and the marble, or something different?

Thank you very much for any help you can offer.

Grout sealer helps keep the grout clean. Porcelain tiles don't need sealing, and some stone tiles don't either. Sealer isn't there for waterproofing, though, so you aren't harming anything by using your shower or other tiled areas.

I wouldn't use any body oils or lotions around the marble until you get it sealed. Also, I wouldn't make pasta with red sauces or pour red wine on the countertops until they are sealed, too.

Once you get your sealer(s) in hand, you need to clean the tile, stone and grout with a good neutral pH cleaner, let everything dry out for several days, then seal per the manufacturer's instructions.

Hi Susan,

I really like StoneTech's Impregnator Pro sealer. I bought it from my local tile shop. The key thing to look for is an impregnating or penetrating sealer. Use it on all of your natural stone - it won't change its appearance at all (unless you get an "enhancing" sealer). You can use it on all of the grout too.

I don't think porcelain will absorb any sealer (someone can chime in to let you know if I'm right), so you won't have to seal that at all. Just use a brush to get the grout lines.

Usually you let the sealer sit for a few minutes and then wipe it off. Left to dry, it could leave a haze so follow the directions. :)
