I have read the past forums post about slate tile in the shower, but have a question about a product. I started sealing the shower with Aquamix penetrating sealer, but after 3-4 coats it still allowed water to penetrate it. I am using Indian slate. Prosoco's Gloss 'N Guard has been recommended to seal a shower, but when I contacted the tech department they stated that it is not recommended. Is this because of the possible run off into the septic system or is there another reason??? I would like the "wet" look, but mainly would like for the shower to be sealed well.
Thank you in advance

I contacted Prosoco and they state the reason they do not recommended Gloss 'N Guard is because it is an acrylic and if water gets behind it, it could turn white. My new question is what are the chances of this happening??? It states the product is good indoors or outdoors so it could be rained on and the like. Anyway I just wondering the likely hood of it developing white spots.

Well, if the manuf. doesn't recommend it i wouldn't either. It may have something to do with the flakiness of the slate, the Indian slate isn't the best.I would recommend an enhancing sealer, but it wouldn't give a shimmering wert look, but it would enhance pretty well.Any topical gloss look sealer will eventually wear,or fall off when the slate spalls, and flakes off.

Hi Jimmy, Welcome! :)
I'm with Dave. Your particular slate is known to flake. This would heighten the chances of any topical sealer fogging. I strongly suggest drying your shower thoroughly after each use to lower the chance of future problems.
For the benefits of others reading this post, very few slates qualify for a successful installation in a shower. Slate should normally be avoided in this application.

Hiya Jimmy, Hope I'm not too late.
If you were planning on using a stone enhancer you woule need to strip the sealer off that you have already applied.
Read this thread:Here (http://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=48508)
For future reference, it is usually best to use the "top of the line" sealers, instead of the "econo" versions. Aquamix is a fine mfr., but I would recommend thier Sealers Choice Gold.
That Indian slate is like a sponge, you'll probably need to keep applying coats and allowing them to dry per Aqumix's instructions, until water beads up.
Hope that helps.
