Morning, ladies and gentlemen.

Long time. I'm stopping in to check and see if you're alright and nobody has mortally wounded themselves in my absence. So far, everything looks pretty good and you've basically behaved.

Sadly, I present myself with a complaint and in a state of utter indecision. My kitchen floor may be the death of me. Okay, maybe that's an exaggeration, but it sure is annoying the heck out of me.

Here are the issues and some facts:
24 X 12.
Uneven concrete slab, water pools in one corner when I mop.
3 door openings--one to backyard patio, one to garage, one to hallway.
4 existing floor layers. 3 peel & stick (yes, heinous), one sheet vinyl.
I have better things to do with my time than maintain a large floor.
DH and I are not getting younger and I want this to be the very last time I replace this floor.

Stamped concrete over radiant heating coils (coil estimate alone was over $2000 without installation)?

Marmoleum looks interesting and not too maintenance-intensive.

Help!
What do I want?

No hurry, I go through this floor-angst every spring. One of these days . . . .

Hi Diane,

Don't suppose you've considered tile? ;)

No. Just use a lot less water, eh? :stick:

Tile means grout. Grout, in my experience, is hard to keep clean.

Stop mopping? Hadn't considered that one. Wonder how long till the grandkids stuck to the floor . . . like flypaper.

If you go with Marmolium, make sure and get someone who's installed it before. Its a whole different animal than standard sheet vinyl.

Have you looked into acid stained concrete. It can be done on the slab or on SLC. Super easy clean up and you'll never have to do the floor again.

(It's nice to meet you. I've been hanging around for a while but don't think I've ever spoken to you before.)

I'm leaning toward acid stained concrete for durability and ease of care, although the Marmoleum would be a softer, more forgiving surface.

Anyone have any experience regarding cracking as the house goes through it's seasonal shifting?

And it's nice to meet you, too, dgunnels.

Cracks can be sealed but they will occur just as they would under any other type of flooring. Cracks can be patched but not with latex fillers. I think cracks actually add to the character.

You'll have to do you research though. The acid stain franchises can be pretty snotty. Will treat you like an idiot. This was my experience. Don't let them mess with you. There are companies who will sell you the stuff. There are some awesome web sites out there with lots of examples and ideas and some people who are very helpful.

Well, what have you decided?
