I'm sure moles are related to gophers, right? Anyone for Caddyshack?
Cheers.

True story..around Fl. we have pocket gophers, and my bro-in-law has most of em in his brand new yard.He don't like no pocket gophers so he tries some of those gopher traps...and gopher scare away items...and a Jack Russel...and the only known natural enemy of the pocket gopher...the Fl. pine snake...of which there aren't any, so you can't go get one.So he hooks up the exhaust of his truck to a gopher mound and let's him have an hour of it...still gopher...so he contacts an old Fl. cracker, and he tells him to go to a huntin store and get some fox urine, or coyote urine and spread it around..he does, and now all his neighbors have gophers, but they won't come into his yard. :goodluck:

Dave, moles eat grubs, I'll bet you have grubs kill them off they have no food. :)

Dan, thanks for posting an excellent article on moles. It's just been in the last few years that we finally learned for sure that the white grub story was just that, a story. I know, I was an entomologist who preached "eliminate the white grubs and the moles will leave" for probably 20 years. Old habits die hard, but mine finally died. :crap: Traps are the best answer, but take lots of practice and also figuring out which are the primary tunnels. Most of the tunnels are used once and abandoned. I love the cold drink/flat shovel method. Enough cold drinks and you probably won't care anymore, at least if they are adult beverage cold drinks. :tup2:

Clyde,
I have a neighbor who is the neighborhood mole trapper. I really haven't paid much attention to what he does, but now I have a mole in my front yard. I've been boning up on my mole knowledge, as I have never had a mole problem previously. I too, believed the grub thing until just recently. My neighbor told me that they eat earthworms, so eliminating the food source is not an option.

I got lucky today. The mole that has been messing with my front lawn made the mistake of making an appearance as I was preparing to water my lawn. He ended up impaled on my sprinkler spike. A quick blow to the head with a shovel might have been more humane, but I didn't think he was going to wait for me to get a shovel. Ya gotta make do with the tools at hand.

One less beady eyed, long nosed, fanged rat.
You gotta' get em' on the first thrust though Dan.... they attack when there wounded.
This is a pic of what two did to my bro (low tile) last summer when he interrupted their lunch.

First thrust, just like I have a thousand times in my dreams.
That picture reminds me of an old Far Side cartoon. There's a guy all bandaged up like that. His friend says to the doctor, "So, Phil says to me, 'do you think the gorilla is dead, or only sleeping?'"

Well, it wasn't instantaneous like a shovel bonk, but it was over in a few seconds.
I was temped to display his skewered body as an example to others, but thought better of it. After all, I'm the new guy in the neighborhood - have to keep up appearances and all.
