Where was this before I started...Oh yeah I thought I knew it all... :o

I am installing HD Saltillo Tile. I had just laid it (no grout, no sealer yet)
I was looking for the correct way to remove the occassional adhesive (Versabond) from the surface. So question 1: How should I remove the versabond that mysteriously and magically appeared on the surface :o?

Then as I am browsing this site... I am reading about preping the tile with different combinations of linseed oil, mineral spirits, water, mexsealer, patuitary gland extract (just kidding about the extract) etc., None of which I did. Which leads me to question 2: Now that I have laid the tile without any prep, is it too late to prep or what should I do from here?

Oh boy what have I done?

Is it too late to buy the book?

Please Help me I will be forever greatful.

John

It is not as complicated as it may seem. Is the Versabond you are speaking of the Customs product? If so it is a polymer blend thinset and may not be quite as removable with mild acid as a regular thinset. Do removal tests on a spare piece of tile that you intentionally put some Versabond on. Success may somewhat limited with acid alone, that would be because of the polymer, so try some acetone on the area before using the acid. For removal test after the acetone cleaning, lightly wet the tile and then use Aquamix Phosphoric Acid Cleaner at various experimental strengths scrubbing with an acid brush. Always remember with Pavers that what you do to an area of an individual tile you must always do to the whole individual tile to eliminate a spot on the area you work on. Again do all of the testing on an extra tile or one that will be under a fridge, never experiment on an area that will show.

As to prep before grout, get the Versabond off first' then use Aquamix Penetrating Sealer as a preseal before grout, following directions on the label. After grouting the sealer used will depend on the finished look you desire. Feel free to call me at 949 8585211 and I will be happy to give you further advice.
