I welcome anyone seeking travel advice to use this thread.
I'm driving to Orlando, Florida from Michigan. I'm leaving tomorrow. I plan to stop in Chattanooga, Tennessee for the night.
I'm open to any advice about roads to avoid, places to stay in Chattanooga, side of town to avoid in Chattanooga, etc.

Are you coming down I-75 or I-24? Are you looking for something quick and easy no frills, or do you want to be close to a variety of the nicer restaurants and what passes for night life in CHA?

Best advice I can give.............
If you cross a state line and the sign ahead says "Welcome to Iraq" execute the fastest U turn you have ever made in your life.

I'll be coming in on I-24. How's the Clarion on Chestnut Street downtown?
If I get in at a reasonable hour, I may be interested in some nightlife.

 You should be okay there. Within walking distance of the riverfront and the aquarium. Lots of restaurants. Check out the Walnut St. bridge (pedestrian bridge across TN river) and Bluffview Art District.

Thanks again, Duncan, for the tips on Chattanooga. I enjoyed my brief stop-over on my way to Florida. I got there with plenty of daylight left, so I did some walking around. The aquarium seems nice, and the whole area was teeming with families enjoying the nice evening.
I considered riding the Incline up Lookout Mountain, but was disappointed to learn that it is temporarily out of service.
I should have asked you where I could get a decent breakfast on a Sunday morning. I never did get one, but I'm sure if I looked hard enough, I could have found a place - had to hit the road though.

Has anyone ever taken US82 from Tifton, Georgia to Montgomery, Alabama? I was considering this route as a way to avoid Atlanta on my way back to Michigan, but I chickened out. I ended up suffering 25 miles of veerrry slow traffic just south of Atlanta last Saturday.
Is Route 82 a reasonable alternative? Are there other alternatives that bypass Atlanta?

Sorry Dan. I've been there and back now. I wasn't really in control of my itinerary, so I doubt I could have visited. Next time. :tup2:

82 is in my neck of the woods. Just drove it Monday. As a route to Montgomery I think you would have done better to take I-10 over to US 231. North from there into Montgomery. 82 is a pretty good road and is 4 lane most of the way, however, it takes you through LOTS of small town and that means stops and slow downs.
ATL can be awful. One of the reasons I don't live there any more. Coupla weeks ago it took me over 2 hours to go 15 miles. :bang:

Thanks, Neesie. I wish I had asked the question a week earlier.
I know there are some decent US highways around the country, but most people are reluctant to use them (probably a good thing for those of us who do.) Most of the online map/direction providers seem to avoid them like the plague.
