Is it just me or is everyone throwing things out their car windows anymore? I mean napkins, half lit cigarettes, whatever they're opening or using in the cars they just throw the wrapping out the window...STOP IT!

The cigarettes throwing out the window just kills me. Does it actually take up so much room that it can't fit in the ashtray? :suspect:

Dave, I came to the same realization 2 years ago while I was living in Evansville, Indiana. It almost seemed fashionable to dump your fast food litter on a residential street.

What ashtray?

Ashtrays are a special order option, if even available with newer cars.:)

but you have to leave a note, so they know why!
but then again they'll just open their door and throw it on the ground!

Eric...thats one ,just like driving in the left lane that I wish the police would crack down on..

So, that means I don't have to use the sidewalk anymore?

Just kidding... :bonk: I do believe 10 years as a paramedic running all over central and south Texas reduced the amount of patience for and acceptance of the stupid things folks do while driving.

Cheers.

slightly unrelated but this thread reminded me of a guy I use to work for years ago. he had a small commercial dumpster at his business location. sometimes at the end of the day while unloading trash we would find someone put a bunch of residential trash in his dumpster. he would quickly look through a bag or two and see if he could find a name and an address. if he could tell where it came from he would put the trash in his truck, drive to that address and dump the bags all over the front lawn. that use to crack me up. I know those people never used his dumpster again.

Well, I'm just like Dave. I get really steamed when I see this. If I'm riding with a person and they do this they get to hear my sermon :blah: My dad even got to hear this lil sermon one time. I just don't understand how people think they can just throw crap out on the ground???

Ok, now that I told you how I feel let me tell you a lil story that happened to me a few years back. I was contracting in Lake Charles LA. doin aircraft work and I happened to be coming home from a bar with one of my buddies. Well, we had way too much to drink and we stopped in at burger king and got some food and headed on back to the house we were renting out in the sticks. Well, this guy new how I felt about throwin trash out and he was bad about it. Anyway, on the way home he threw his bag of trash out the window and wouldn't ya know it the bag hit the grill on the cop car behind us. Hahahahahaha. Well, of course I shouldn't have been driving in my condition and I know that and I DONT do that kinda thing anymore. Well, I pull over and the cop comes up to my window, sticks his arm in past my face and points at my friend and says, "I wanna see your license BOY" Hahahah He was pissed. Of course he went on to tell us how he hates litter bugs and his passion to keep the streets clean :blah: Well, I was a lil drunk and started to share in his passion of how I jump on people all the time for doing it and agreeing with him and pointing the finger at my passenger like he was a lil boy. I even told the police man that I threw mine in the back of my truck and I never litter. He pans the back of the bed with his flashlite looking for my trash and there aint nuttin' in there. He hollers back to his buddy to give us both a "litter bug" ticket. I started arguing wth him and then he's gotta bring up the drinkin thing so I shut up and took my ticket :x: Never been more humiliated in my life. Got a ticket for the very thing I hate. I am an official litter bug in Louisianna :complain:

> The cigarettes throwing out the window just kills me.

Years ago when I was just a kid in college I was driving my veedub on a freeway in LA and smelled something burning. Ignored it at first but it got worse, then I saw smoke coming from the floor - pulled off the freeway and found my floor carpet smoldering. Someone had tossed a lit cig out their window and it came in mine and set the floor on fire.

When I see someone in front of me throw stuff out a window, I immediately honk the horn and start yelling... It's disgusting... (both the littering and the profanity that exits my mouth!)

I was at a stop light one day where the woman ahead of me threw out a dirty napkin. I got out of the truck, picked it up and threw it right back into her drivers window... (Again, a few choice four letter words were used)

GGRRRRrrrrrr! Don't get me started! I think it's getting worse every where. Frances and I were talking about it this noon and we both realized that we rarely see anyone toss trash, but the roadways are worse than they used to be (and that ain't sayin much). There was a letter to the editor in the local paper this morning by a Lions Club member saying they just completed picking up trash on a section of road they maintain and there was more trash this time than last.

And then . . . cigarette butts! :smash: :bang: There is one exit ramp here in Clemson that I take quite often. The shoulder of the ramp on the drivers side right before the stop light has so many butts on the ground I think you could walk 10 car lengths and never touch the ground.

Slight diversion here (it's well overdue)....

We had someone fill our dumpster with a bunch of stuff. These highly intelligent folks dumped items containing their address, on MANY items. That bunch of stuff did end up in their front yard. The dumpster diving was worth it! :D

And living next to National Forest land, those cigarette butt -heads have caused a few forest fires.

Yeah I hate liter out the ole window as well. My buddy would do it all the time so while he was on vacation. i went over and put platis soons all over his front yard and back yard. Stuck them face up like grave stones. the neighbors even helped me . i wish i would have been there when they came home. needless to say he wasnt very happy.

On the way home just this Tues, I was stopped at a stoplight behind a car plastered with 'save the wildlife', 'i brake for turtles' and 'be green' bumperstickers. The driver rolled down his window and threw a cigarrette wrapper out the window.

I finally did what I always mean to do but never have the guts (brainlessness?) to do: I got out of my car, walked up to the car, picked up the paper, held it up to him and said, calmly, "You shouldn't litter - especially with all those bumperstickers. What would yr turtles say?"

I took the paper back to my car and threw it out at home.

Shawn--you just brought up one of the most important thing about this ...Sometimes even when you dont do it you can still pick it up...walking down the side walk watching papers blow by and not taking 10 seconds to pick it up and throw it away!!! lead by example!!

I agree, but my point is this: littering is so self-evidently wrong, the transgressor knows it's a schmucky thing to do, he just thinks no one is watching. When we curse and yell at him, his first reaction is to get mad and defensive and to think what an ass YOU are.

When you call him out calmly and fix his error, he's gotta feel guilty and there's nothing he can say.

That being said, I wanted to shove that piece of paper down his punkass throat with my 36" ice scraper - pointy side down.

Years ago I was driving my brother home from school. We were traveling down an Interstate at the usual rate of speed when genius-boy decides to throw a cigarette pack wrapper out the window. Now I don't know why he opened the pack in the first place 'cause he sure wasn't about to light up in MY car. By the time I got the car stopped it musta been about a half mile walk back to that cellophane wrapper. I don't think he ever littered again.

I've done beach clean ups often and I hate the nasty people. You don't see this sort of filth in Europe.
