da Big Red Moderator shut down the Labor Day thread before I could answer Kelly's question as to whether Zorro ought to pay him money for using his (Kelly's) signature, even though Z. attributed it to him.
The answer is no (unless Kelly had taken it out as a "trademark"). The concept is called "fair usage." You can use short passages of other people's stuff as long as you attribute it to them. There are no hard, fast rules, but usually a paragraph or less can be attributed to "fair usage."
Now when it comes to stealin' pics off other people's web sites, well the lawyers haven't had time to work all that out yet, being as how most lawers don't have a lot of time to mess around on the Internet. I usually ask, though, and if I don't, I always attribute by making the pic into a live link back to the site I stole it from. It's only fair.
Oh, I just remembered. It's not "fair usage" if you're making money off of it. You can get in deep doo doo over that.
Yeah, well, I don't know about all that legalese, John, but I agree it's "reasonable" for you to take Rob's side in any dispute twix him and moi - him bein' about twicet as big and all.
Been seein' that sort of treatment all my life. Won't hold it against you none. [tehe] Oh, no, I really won't.

Oh, and the other thing, Kelly. You're pretty good with Messican, but your Frog needs some improvement. It's not "bois de arc." It's "bois d'arc." ;)
And I have never disparaged a man on account of his size, only on the size of his brain. I like people who have bigger brains than mine (not counting plain head). You pass, mon ami.

There have been many things (images) I have found on the internet that could not be copied and pasted or printed for that matter. This tells me there is a means of controlling ones images if they don't want them used by others for whatever the reason.
Based on that.....I then consider everything on the internet that CAN be copied to be in the "Public Domain". Until the legal beagles sort all this out I will use whatever I find for fun and information and not worry about it.
If they don't want it copied let them protect it.
Bud, I have never seen a picture that could not be stolen from a internet site? You sure your not doing something wrong..Try save link as, or copy link location, save image as, if it will not work for you the other way.
If it is showing up in your browser that means it is in your computer already.
The way the web works is you download the HTML code and your browser then translates that. Along with the HTML any pictures are also sent to your computer, If they are not sent then you get "bad link" error or the picture does not show up.
Once you have the picture saved in your cache it is yours. All you really do when you save a picture or copy a picture is move it from your cache to another folder.
The only way they could prevent you from doing this is if you have Java enabled and the remotly run a program in your computer that blocks common shell commands.
A program like that would be malicious and there are security features in your browser that will not accept that kind of code or any code that restricts read/write priveliges in your shell.
Yep I am certain it is how your saving them BUD, but just incase I am wrong(wont be the first time let me tell ya) next time you find one send me the link so I can see for myself. Interesting

JC,
I think Bud might be talking about "redirect." Sometimes when you try to "Copy" or "Save As," other things happen, and you might end up on a different site altogether. For people who don't understand HTML and the fact that everything happens on your own computer, this can be daunting. I venture to say just about everyone here thinks this board is somewhere off in cyberspace. Well, it is! :D

You guys may be right. I don't pretend to understand any of this stuff but I know copying can be prevented. For example in the case of copyrighted photos that appear on the internet. Some of that stuff cannot be copied and you get a notice telling you so.
Another example, earlier this year while attending an awards banquet in San Diego the company my wife works for hired a professional photographer. During a three day event he took 600 pictures of everyone and everything.
He then posted all the photos on the internet and we were notified via email. The photos were nimbered and we could fill out the order form on the internet, choose the flicks we wanted (to buy) and he would send us the photo prints we ordered. We could pay for our order right then and there.
The photos could not be copied, saved, printed or anything else I tried.
Give me a link Bud I need to see for myself if ya don't mind.
Not that I don't beleive you but I have never seen such a thing.
John:
I am tres honored by your comments, of course. Muchas gracias.
Hell, I can't spell in Newnitedstates, how you 'spect me to know French? And it damn sure ain't a phoenetic spelling! [Ever wonder why phoenetic ain't spelled the way it sounds?]
You ever try to make anything out of that there wood? Aside from fence posts, that is.

Well, your French is improving. You said "tres."
No, never made anything out of bois d'arc. Always thought is was something other than wood. Bent wood, maybe?
Bois can also me "woods," like in Central Park.

JC
You don't believe me??? I'm crushed!
Now here's the problem with furnishing you with the link....
We received notice by email that the photos were available for viewing and purchase at such and such website address. We only viewed, purchased nothing.
The email has been long ago deleted. So unless you can tell me how to find this info in my "history" files somehow then it is lost for good. If you can't tell me how to find it then I can check with someone at the company my wife works for to see if anyone there still has the info still.
If I remember correctly the photos we were concerned with would only be available for 30 days, but if I had the name of the photographer then he surely would have fresh products for sale. Problem there is, we were also assigned a password so as to access his website, so I assume these flicks are not for viewing by just anyone.
Bois d'arc all same Horse Apple tree, which is all same Osage Orange tree. Got lotta names round here.
Can understand your thinking it was something other than wood - could be mistaken for long skinny rock.
I know where there are couple logs of the stuff. Customer's hired hand cut down one of the bigger ones I've seen - by accident. One of them language problems. Customer wanted he should TRIM the tree. He trim it where it go in the ground.
Wood is rather yellow in color. Looks like it might be interesting for some accent pieces. Like inlaid with some Purple Heart and such. I could prolly steal some of it.

Steal it and season it about four years for me, will ya? I gotta finish my dresser this winter or Patti's gonna leave me. If she doesn't leave me, she'll make me wish she had. She'll give me "the look."

THE LOOK ....
Webster's definition:
"A universal, hormonal, congenital, physiological expression existing in the female species which effectively restricts the male ability to propagate funtional brain-waves."

LOL
John:
That Bois D'arc is already prolly seasoned ten years. It's gotta be ready - if I can find it.
It belong the Crystal Palace customers and I was just there this very day fixin' the hot tub (call the builder no matter what's the problem) but didn't think to look.
I'll have to drive by there ever day for the next few months getting to my next add-on project. I really will try to find one of those logs. I'd like to see what it looks like in board form.
You equipped to deal with a log? Or should I see if the local Cedar guy will saw it for me? What shape/size would suit you best? I think it may be 12 inch caliper or more, but I've slept since then.
I been wantin' to do that for years, actually.
John Bridge

I can deal with anything, but a log presents a problem. It would be much nicer if it could be cut down to below six inches. It will then fit in my planer, and of course I can re-saw from there.
I'm getting excited, but don't you keep me from finishing my dresser, hear?
