Recieved this from one of the "experts in the aisle" at Home Depot. The person does not want to be identified.
Hey John,
Not sure if you recall my name. Anyhow I have some info that you can use and/or pass on to the other members of this forum. I work at Home Depot ( I believe I've noted that before) and we quite frequently get special order flooring returned to us. For example, I just bought 100/sf of slate for $50 , regular price was $576, special octagon ceramic 56/sf for $28 regular $257.....two sheets of vinyl both 9x12 for $98 regular $1296.......yes, that twelve hundred dollars, and two 8x10 area rugs for $96 each , one worth around $500 and the other about $300..
SO the next time you go there check out the clearance section if they have one.......you'll never know what you will find.
I sent you this private message cus I didn't want my name sent to the public with this thread. Not sure if the company would appreciate me handing out this info........
Jeez....everytime I check the clearance section, all I can find are lumpy bags of Versabond...no wait....that's in the regular section.:shades:

I'd think the corporate office,,, no wait, I'd think their suppliers would appreciate the info getting out to the pro's. It's not like everything you sell is bad (in spite of what others say), and besides, as a contractor, I could make a few bucks.
I know you guys have a database of contractors. It'd save you a lot of face value if you could get rid of the stuff at any price rather than having it shipped back to the supplier or to a close-out wherehouse. Everyone could benefit.
AND... I wanna add this... before there was HD, there was HandyDan's. You wanna talk about shit for product, they were buying freight salvaged junk from train wrecks and selling it at Sear's prices. In the beginning, HD did just a little bit better, but it was still crap.
Now, the tides have changed and I can generally buy the basic stuff from HD at prices that please the pocket book. True enough, they don't carry drawer stock or 16 spp. of mahogany, but hey, whatever you buy, I find that the remainder of the industry has kinda given in. Remember when SPF was first offered by HD and other boxes? I personally prefer it for some applications. No, I wouldn't use it for sizeable ceiling/floor joists, but if you haven't noticed, they don't offer those sizes in SPF.
I think HD and the Lowes and their ilk have probably done more good than harm.
Is there anyone on this forum that hasn't bought products from the boxes, and know that they're good products and knowing that you could over-buy and not have questions axed when you took the excess back for credit?
I personally don't have a problem with the boxes. As a true professional. Most in my area know me and they know they would be better off telling me the truth than even trying to smoke my face. Well, except for the new associates, I always have fun with them. The older farts get a good laugh out of it.
True enough, not everybody can know everything. My favourite plumber associate was downloading pallets of particle board this evening. I didn't have time to wait, but I know if my concept fails, he'll have a better idea than me... and probably send me to the local wholesale plumbing supply company without hesitation.
Ahh, well, been one of those... I'm goin' to the kitchen... the drinks are colder in there.
Everyone have a great holiday, kiss everyone you know. It may be your last opportunity.
How'd it go??? Only four things you can't take back in your life...
The loosed arrow.
The missed opportunity.
The spoken word.
the fourth I forget,....
Cami???? Jim???? Anyone???? I think it was Shakespearean
Anyway, what was the subject of this thread??? (couldn't find the off-topic smiley)

Clearance and reduced tag merchandise is a way of life. In a store that carries 65,000+ items, you can't afford to have merchandise just laying around. The information your source gave you is no secret. If you get in friendly with associates at the Special Services desks at the local Home Depot, they may even call you when they come up with merchandise for a real bargain.
The reason for the reduced tag merchandise is either the customer didn't want it or the wrong product came in. Either way it can be a win-win situation for the contractor. Every store processes these marked down products different and it's generally up to the store management on what kind of pricing to use to sell through the product. My store, for example, sets the reduced price to cost. That's typically all I need to do to unload the merchandise and save somebody some real money.
Another cost saving tip: watch for clearance merchandise. Those items are generally marked with yellow shelf tags. Home Depot has gotten pretty aggressive on dropping prices on this stuff and you can score some real bargains. Recently we took the entire line of Banan Appeal tile to 10 cents per piece. These decorative tiles started at anywhere from one dollar to 50 bucks per piece. The day the markdown came in to the system, I got on the phone with a few of my favorite tile guys and sold the whole lot. This frees up space for new products and makes them happy at the same time.
Nice icon..I'm stealing it....you can't stop me...muhahahahha
