My stone guy just completed a marble tile bath install and the client has decided that they don't like the grout color. It is too light. We usually try to use a grout that is very close to the color of the stone but in this case they chose a contrast and now we are prepariong to dye the grout. It has not been sealed and the marble is of a polished variety. What is the best product and how long will this last? Thanks for the advice. Jay

Trick question...I colored grout one time about a year ago. I used a Custom grout colorant product readily available a HD. I went from Haystack to Nutmeg on a new ceramic floor installation and my octogenerian neighbors went from ballistic to 'pleased as punch' even though they had selected and purchased the tile and grout. Peace continues to rule here on the mean streets of Josephine. Word up an' tru dat'.

You're dealing with marble, Jay.Grout colorant is a serious stain. Marble stains seriously. You would have to seriously seal the marble but in doing so you would seal the grout and compromise it's stainability.

My advice would be to take the money and run. Hopefully, you didn't pick or even suggest any colors.

Hi Jay, Welcome! :)

Can you post a picture? The type of marble can adversely affect the results. Even if you seal the marble, the grout stain can leach into the edges. Also it is sometimes difficult to get a good bond to unsanded grout (especially the ones heavy with additives).

If you choose to pursue this, lets start with some pictures. ;)

This is a tough one, I would suggest not staining and just bite the bullet and regrout it after I carefully removed the existing grout. Usually nonsanded grout comes out pretty easily with a razor knife.

I would not at all be concerned about using Aqua Mix Grout Colorant on this installation. As long as you clean up the excess grout colorant on the stone as you go along. A dwell time on the stone of 2 minutes is not a problem.

It would certainly be safer than regrouting which might well score the stone if you slip at all.

Too bad you are not in California or we would be pleased to do it for you.

Good Luck
