This is really a sheet rock question . . . made a patch (about three square feet behind lavatory) in my bathroom following a ceramic tile overhaul. I used some plaster patch I had on hand and noticed that it had a "different" odor, but since my sinus was a little messed up I thought it will clear. Well the next morning, after my sinus had cleared, I noticed it really smelled bad. I promptly threw out the rest of the material and I saw it had soured.

It's been almost 24 hours and the odor is still present, though not quite as bad.

My question is: Have any of you ever run into this? Will the odor go away, or will I need to tear out and remove completely? Will a good paint job seal it in after it dries?

Haven't had it myself, but i've smelled some rough drypack before..why not spray a little bleach on it.

It will eventually subside. Yes, I've done it to myself before. ;)

Appreciate the help
I tried a little mist of the clorox cleanup and it seemed to help

I would be sure to use a primer sealer like kilz before you apply your finish coat of paint.

Yes, I'll be using Kilz . . . It's been 48 hours now and the odor, for the most part, is gone. However when I sanded it stirred it up a little. So I think it's on it's way out, but I don't want it showing up again or growing something through the paint!

Thanks again.

Sometimes a cat will find our sand pile on the job. That's some rank mud. :yeah:
