repeat of question I thought I had posted in earlier ... perhaps all you American experts are still asleep!
I need to know, with some urgency what type of paint you recommend that will stick well to slate. I am attempting to start a business whereby I will mount people's photos on to slate - ordinary (Brazilian Pendennis) roofing slate that is a light grey-green in colour and needs to be painted black for uniformity and consistency. To save me from lengthy and costly experimentation, does anyone have experience of painting slate? I have used a black acrylic 'Weatherclad' exterior masonry paint made by Fleetwood Paints who seem to be a subsidiary of Sherwin Williams of Ohio. It scrapes off alarmingly easily with a finger-nail. Is there a good paint for my purpose or, perhaps, a primer that will ensure good adhesion?

Hi Leonard, Welcome! :)

Since you are a first time poster, how could "us Americans" be asleep? :shades: :D

More than likely your slate is very dense. I would try priming the surface with a product called XIM Bonding Primer. They have several available (both clear & white). Here's a link (http://www.ximbonder.com/products.asp?id=20) to some of their products.

Hope this helps!

I really appreciate your reply - ta very much! Comment about sleeping Americans was a reference to our very different time zones, not the collective alertness of your nation! I went straight to the site you suggested but alas, they do not sell their products in Europe. Could you recommend similar primers from other manufacturers? Your help much appreciated.

Hi Leonard :)

Thanks for following up with a explanation of your terminology!

I'll do some research and see what I can come up with. There isn't anything that immediately comes to mind though.

I like the above primer for simular projects.
I mount deer head and dead fish, not photos of Jacki and the kids. :loaded:
But same concept in theory.

PS--assuming you are in England...thanks a bunch for Debbie Travis...she has this primal attraction that I just can't get enough of.
:bonk:

The most tenacious paint I've come across in years is Sherwin-Williams "Incredi Coat". I don't know if they offer dark bases.
I agree about 'Zinzer Bullseye'...It's a hell of a primer.
